Hi all - I'm thinking of getting an early Saturday morning train from Kings Cross to Cambridge in March. Their policy seems to say bikes are welcome, but do I need to make a special bike booking or can I just turn up on the day? Anyone got any experience?

Cheers

No booking required, but weekdays it depends on the time of day and which direction you are travelling in. No restrictions on Saturdays and Sundays.
If I remember correctly, no bikes allowed on trains into London after 07.30 until 09.30. Coming out of London no bikes between 16.30 and 19.30.
So as you are travelling from K. X. on a Saturday you will be ok.

I take my bike on the Great Northern Line north from Stevenage (On Peak). There are no extra tickets/reservations to make.

However, I wouldnt be able to take it into Kings Cross, on peak. (although, I did give one bloke a second look when I saw him loading his bike (non folder) on the 17:14 from Kings Cross last week. How come he was able to get away with it!?

here is the restrictions map:

As far as im aware, the restrictions only apply on peak. So if you are travelling on a Saturday, you'll be fine.

I hope it's obvious, but ensure you sit/stand within view of the bike. There's been a couple people on that line, between Finsbury Park, and Bayford who've had bikes nicked while they were sitting only a couple meters away when it stopped at a station, and not until the train started moving,,....did they see their dearly beloved pass by the window..

I take my bike (non-foldy) on the train from King's Cross to Cambridge (express) every morning. You shouldn't have any probs on a Saturday AM and I'd be surprised if you had much company.
