I'm about to embark on my first bike build. It's more of a transfer of items across from my Specialize Allez Sport, which is too big for me, to a new frame and fork.

I've sourced the following:

Kinesis Racelight T frame
Deda Black Rain fork
Integrated headset (correct size too!) for the above
Bung for the carbon steerer
Long drop brakes (required for the fork and for mudguard clearance)
Sora FC-3450 compact chainset
Tiagra SM-FC4500 bottom bracket

I have the following to transfer from the Allez Sport:

TIagra 9sp STI's on bars inc. all cables.
Cable outers
Chain
105 rear mech
Tiagra front mech
Seatpost
Seat post clamp (checked that it, the front mech and seatpost are the same size as the Kinesis frame

)
Seat
Pedals
CXP-22/Tiagra hub wheelset inc. All Condition 25c tyres
Headset spacers
Stem (might be getting something fancier though depending on whether a CC member has chucked his old stem...

)
Bottle cage

I'm thinking that new brake/gear outers could be a good investment - would a new cable set be worth it too to ensure there's no hassle in that department? I'm trying to keep costs low so does anyone recommend a good but cheap cable set? I'm also not sure whether I need 4 or 5mm bore cable outers?

This is going to be my winter/commute machine so it's getting the old Crud Roadracer guards from my Allez but I'll be upgrading to Blumels when birthday money arrives, hence the attention to long drop brakes and frame/fork clearances & eyelets.

Can anyone think of anything else or give any tips?

You've maybe already thought about it but I can't see Bar Tape on that list. I take it the diameter of the frame tubing is the same on both bikes too. Good Luck

Bars are already wrapped and shifters are in place - lifted directly off the Allez.

Frame diameter (seat tube) is the same. Fornt mech and seat post will fit fine.

All new cables (inners & outers) is a good idea. Anything with stainless steel cables. I think Jagwire do a complete set.

I tend to buy individual brake cable inners from my LBS as it's one thing they are no more expensive than anywhere else, and although unbranded the quality is excellent.

Outers: IIRC 5mm is brake, 4 mm is gear, but make sure the gear one is "compresionless" not traditional "bowden" cable outer.

Looks like a new set of cables then. TBH the old set are looking pretty tired now and are probably original. I may leave the brake cables in the bars at the moment as they've recently been wrapped but put new inners in them.

:becool: When I put new dropped bars on the Sirrus it was surprisingly easy but I never had to tackle the BB and didn't have to do much with the forks. The Tiagra deraileurs stayed too. As advised I added new cables (inner and outer) and what a difference that made. Over time I'd already put new wheels and saddle/ seat post on it, nothing complicated there. I take it you have the right tools?

I've done the Hollowtech 2 one on my Trek MTB to clean it as it got noisy after 3 months use! It's a common problem with the design apparently and lo and behold, I took it out, cleaned it, re-greased and back in - no more noise. They're surprisingly simple to do really so it's not a job I'm scared of now.

The only problem I'll have is with the headset, that'll need to be put in at the LBS. Other than that I can get it all together no probs, I'll need help from a mate to set the gears up though but he's said he'll give me a hand if I can teach him how to make Garmin CRS files!

Ok, headset isn't an issue, apparently integrated ones just slip into the cups in the frame easy as pie. I've still not got cables sorted - lunchtime job is to go down the LBS and get him to make a set of stainless ones up for me. Everything's here except the forks, mudguards and stem which should all come tomorrow so I'm well on the way, except........

I had a bit of a buggeration this evening though - I went to clean the front derailleur before mounting it and it was a bit seized so I decided to take it apart, clean, re-grease, re-assemble and rounded off the main hex pivot bolt. Luckily CRC have Tiagra front mechs for £15 so got one ordered. Hopefully it might arrive on Saturday.

If you're using new forks, you will probably still need to pop down the LBS so they can put the crown race (bottom part of the headset) on the forks. Not sure if installing it is actually that difficult come to think of it. I was swapping out forks that came with the frame for alternatives when I built mine though. Took it into the LBS because the (new) forks were wobbling all over the place...

Lol says the LBS man - some idiot has installed these new forks without the crown race
I won't do that again in a hurry

Good tip SD. I spoke to the guy at the LBS about it and he said it'd be fine if the crown race was a split one, which it is so I installed it without any probs.

Progress pics in the Photo Gallery!

Start putting it together, you'll soon find out what you forgot.

Probably at 4:30 pm on Sunday when the LBS shuts.
