OK they were only a tenner from Lidl and the pad is about as thick as an empty packet of crisps but thought it was a sensible way to see if I liked them without spending ridiculous money. Already tried them on and although I look like a total prat they seem comfortable enough. First test ride awaits.....

Being a little self conscious of my weight and showing the world my untoned ass, I wear baggy shorts over my cycling bib.

The thickness of the pad is less important than its stiffness and ability to resist creasing. A thick gel pad is sweaty and uncomfortable.

I've got these :- http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CLPXCMBS/planet-x-clubman-bib-shorts - they're good & not tooo pricey. Done 1000+ Miles using 2 pairs of these, no signs of wear and good pads.

My understanding is that it keeps the pad still and because there is no waistband there is no chance of it digging in at the waist.
Also that it keeps your back and kidneys warm(er) in the winter. I felt a bit of a n*bber when I first wore some, but I wouldn't wear anything else now. But you do get what you pay for - I suspect your lidl bargain will not be representative of what a decent quality pair can do for your riding. Check out Wiggle's own brand DHB for sensibly priced and well specced bibs.

I don't get it. If you were a chef wearing check trousers an apron and a tall hat would you walk around all day wondering if people thought you were a nobber? Would you self consciously run in hob nailed boots and a boiler suit because someone might laugh at your shorts and vest?
If so let me break it to you slowly - you are a nobber.
If you are riding your bike down to Waitrose in the hope of meeting and impressing a young lady with your machismo study the Cabello catalogue or buy a BMW otherwise...

I have 2 pairs of cheap summer tights which have lasted me some 3000 miles, next year I am going to buy some expensive ones in the hope they last more than one season
