OK so its not strictly a race, more of a charity event but its still 60miles and there are a few of us doing a 140k sportive in September and I have never done an 'event' before so I figured this is as good a place to start as any.

Pretty sure I have all the kit in terms of spares but any other tips? power bars? that weird gel stuff?

Vaseline?

Enjoy.

No point doing it unless you are. Everything else is neither here nor there.

If you're happy doing a fast pace that's fine but it's not a race and there will be others of varying speeds. Have a good meal before the off. Drink plenty. Rest often. Take a good repair kit with you suited to the bike. Eat little and often.

Why not try a CC day ride before September? North Essex July ride would be ideal (if it goes ahead). ;)

Thanks Chris, Kids are away first 2 weeks in August so am pretty free to roam if there will be any CC rides around then otherwise its difficult unless i have a few weeks notice.

As I said, have my saddle pouch with spares and repair kit etc just not sure what to eat? cereal bars and things? my boss has got some of these energy sachets but I am a bit dubious of these whats wrong with a couple of banana's?

Have plenty of Sudocreme left over from the sprogs so will apply with generosity!

Banana's are fine, but don't travel well. Gels are ok but I tend to use them on very long rides or at the end of long rides and try and use normal food as much as possible. I love anything sweet so cereal bars and jelly babies are good for me. Some people like fig rolls and a pre-buttered malt loaf which can then be slipped back into the plastic pack and in your back pocket. There's various views on what's good or not. Be sure to drink plenty and if it's hot and balmy then a pre-prepared energy drink from one of the sports food companies won't go amiss. Evans cycles sell a SIS introduction pack which is full of gels, bars, drinks, recovery drinks, etc. which is a good introduction to the pre prepared sports food market and you can get an idea of what you like and what you don't.

I'm away in August, but there's also a FNrttc (Friday night ride to the coast) to Bognor Regis from Hyde Park Corner which should be fun and has a lot of the reprobates nice people from London and surrounds who post on here riding. Otherwise there's a similar overnight ride on 2nd October from Hyde park Corner to Southend which is easier and flatter. They're all good fun and the wife/ kids don't miss you as it's done overnight. ;) Otherwise keep an eye on the "CC and Informal Rides" section as there's loads of others going on, usually with plenty of notice.

Get sorted out and come to Bognor Wigsie - it will not hurt. (Going there)
And then we can all 'mouseketeer it back to Kent* with you ;)

*If you live somewhere near Deal then even a mouseketeer can 'gulp'

As Chris says, it's fun (going there )

May well do Bogner reading the last few FNRttC posts and Mouseketeer efforts they sound great!

Bogner to Folkestone (only 12 miles or so shy of deal) after London to Bogner?

Hmmm how many days can i do it in?

GrumpyGregry

Here for rides.
just stay awake and keep pedalling; you'll get there in the end and 'there' will be a lot further along than you thought it was possible for it to be.

Don't set off to quickly - your adrenaline might tempt you to follow on the wheel of the speed merchants. Don't let it.

Sports drink in your bottle, not water. drink regularly.

Food supplies in your pocket
