I visited my step daughter & son-in-law over the Christmas period, down in London. On the Tuesday (28.12.10) my son-in-law and I went out for a bike ride. He's a lot younger and fitter than me. He took me on a lovely route around the Surrey area, taking in Box Hill and Epsom etc. Anyway, it was a steady pace (for my benefit), and I found it reasonably easy compared to the kind of terrain wher I live (derbyshire), clocking in my first 40 miler. I was really pleased with myself as I've not been out too much lately due to the weather etc. The problem was that I had a banging headache for 2 days after!!. I kept myself well hydrated during the ride and even had an energy gel. After the ride I had plenty of water to drink, but I just couldn't shake the headache. I suppose it could've been due to a bit of over indulgence during the xmas period, plus too little sleep (shift worker!). Any other ideas?, I don't want this kind of thing happening every time I push myself a bit further.

Well done! Used to live in Epsom 20 years ago, so I know what a nice undulating area it is for cycling.
Not entirely sure ehy the headache, hydration can certainly play a part. Were you wearing a helmet? It could be cause by neck tension from being in an unfamiliar position for a long time with the added issue of an unnatural weight on your head?

If it happens again, a trip to the quack would seem in order.

Keep-up the good work!

Could it be a tension headache? Perhaps you were screwing your eyes up against the sun or cold.

Well done for the 40 miler! I'd suggest the headache is from the cold air blowing around your head..... You may need to wrap up a bit more...

Thanks for the replies. I was wearing a helmet, but it's my usual one, so I can't see that being the problem. The screwing up of the eyes theory could be a good one as I don't have any glasses. I have been meaning to get some and this particular ride confirmed that I definitely need some. I was screwing my eyes up a lot to combat the wind/spray. Thanks for your words of encouragement.

Well done Sparty...its a nice milestone to reach.
Get yourself something like Bolle Vipers, or Contours...anything of that type. Straight forward safety glasses, plastic, moderately stylish.... cheap and effective for winter cycling. No streaming cold eyes therefore no squinting. The only thing they're no good for is rain. They're only £5 or £6 off ebay...i couldnt envisage a winters ride without them. You even forget you've got them on sometimes.
