I completed my first 40 mile ride this morning. I did 40.9 miles at an average of 13.1 mph.

I was disappointed that I didn't get under the 3 hr mark but given the strong crosswind for most of the ride, the last 7 miles being slightly uphill into a headwind and the fact that I'm still over 21 st, I'm pretty pleased with myself.

I started training 5 weeks ago and have done around 370 miles, cleared my bank account but bought a new Roubaix and some great cold weather kit and a Garmin 200. Its the best thing I've done in years. Lost over a stone and loving life.

Well done on the 40 miles and the total so far, things do get easier, just one point though I reckon on about 40 calories per mile or so a quick bit of maths is that you have used about 14,800 calories so to burn one pound of body fat its 3500 calories thats about 4lb and 4oz give or take, so you must have changed something else as well, like your diet or drink.
The figures I have used are only a guide, but they seem to work with my weight loss which after 2,000 miles or so should be in the range of 1st 11lb I very much doubt i have lost that much maybe half of that total, though to be far I dont weigh myself.
p.s. only did 30 miles myself today, so again very well done.

I'm also eating and drinking less and more healthy stuff. Without that I don't think I'd have the energy to get on the bike. I imagine I burn more calories than the average being larger than average. I'm sure I've also replaced fat with muscle which weighs more which is even better.

I was only going off a rough guide, the weight loss seems to have come from your change in diet then, very impressive in 5 wks, and for the record your just as fast as me, and I have been riding since June 23rd, I have done 7 40 mile+ rides in that time three at 14.4mph+ avg (though they might not have been a single ride) the other four are 13.4-12.6mph the 12.6 was back in July. The biggest difference between that and yesterdays ride apart from yesterday being 1/2mph faster is the elevation 21.5ft per mile on the 26/7 yesterday 59.9ft per mile. nearly three times the climb rate, at first I couldn't stand hills, they hurt so much, but this last month or so I have been climbing more and they are getting easier.
So keep it up.

Well done that man,
I reckon you're going to be a force to reckon with speedwise as you gain saddle miles and your 'personal aerodynamics' improve!
It's taken me ages to drop 3 stone and pick up 3 mph, but I'm getting steadily better as I keep at it.
