Finding a replacement part for the brake lever but I don't know what it is

Hello,

Not too long ago I fell off my bike; not much damage, my bruises will heal.

However, I discovered later that a part was missing from the brake lever. I am new to bike anatomy so please forgive my lack of knowledge, I have included some pictures to help identify the part.

It's the black insert that keeps the little metal tube (that is holding the inner brake cable) in the brake lever. It is still functional, but I would rather not risk the brake suddenly cutting out on me!

They are vintage CLB brakes, that are not too hard to find on ebay, so I could just replace the entire brake; it is also very slightly bent from the accident. Don't know if that is a case of removing it and re-positioning it or if I should buy a replacement.

Would appreciate any advice on where to find a replacement 'bit'. I'm sure I could fashion something that would function just as well.

If I had to ask at a shop myself, I'd call it a "nipple holder", just be careful what shop you ask in :giggle:
The equivalent on a m/cycle would be a "cable nipple holder barrel"

I'd have thought they are pretty standard in size so you may be able to rescue one from a cheap damaged lever. Otherwise, see what else is available.

Go to your local bike shop and ask. They may have something in their tray of bits.
It's the black insert that keeps the little metal tube (that is holding the inner brake cable) in the brake lever.
This doesn't seem to me to be the ferrule itself; it's the plastic grommet but longer bit that takes the ferrule - part of the brake itself. They get a bit fragile after 30 years. Don't think this (going by the images) is going to result in the brake cable outer 'jumping out' at a critical time. Once the OP's put a squeeze on the lever it's going nowhere.
it is also very slightly bent from the accident. Don't know if that is a case of removing it and re-positioning it
Probably all that's needed is to remove the bar tape, untighten the band that clamps the brake to the bar and reposition, and re-wrap bar taps.

thanks for the advice guys. Will head into my closest shop first and ask; failing that I'll get a whole new brake cable ferrule from ebay

I guess it went missing when the accident occurred, must have popped out from the force

The ferrule's the silver metal thing on the end of each bit of brake and gear cable outer. You probably have about 8 all told on that bike. Need to take the brake in (off the bike) or the bike, to the LBS so they're clear what you need.
