Got my Garmin with cadence meter, so I went out for a ride even though I was knackered from staying up too late and not feeling so good.

So with the excuses out of the way I did 20 miles with 900ft climbing and my average cadence was 100, avg speed was 17mph.

I knew I liked to spin it and I don't feel I adjusted my style now I had measurement of my cadence.

...I really want a cadence sensor to go with my edge 500, its going on the bday list!

IMO

High Cadence = waste of energy
Low Cadence = waste of joints (knees etc)
Natural Cadence (should be somewhere inbetween and is not a value to get hung up about) and will work best for you.

A certain dodgy bloke suggested 90rpm as the ideal value and whilst I tend to average a figure around that my self on a continous ride, its nothing to get hung up about. My cadence metre failed at the start of the year and I don't see any point in rushing out to replace it.

I like to have a very wide range of gears available to me so I can choose whatever cadence suits me at any given moment. The only time that breaks down is on very steep climbs (>= 20%, say) when lack of fitness means that I can only manage a fairly low cadence despite having a tiny granny gear (25 inches).

I wouldn't start pedalling at a different cadence just because a meter gave a low or high reading.

I generally tend to opt for higher cadence rather than lower, but I don't know what the exact number is.
