i can believe the amount of morons i encounter whilst out on my bike. i have been putting up with hecklers shouting out of windows and making rude jestures. i just ignore them but i have had the worst experience with a group of youn lads slowing right down to drive along side me and say the most perverse things only to then try and squeeze me off the main road in front of other motorists. i have reported them to the police and the police said they can do nothing because no crime was commited! if i had fallen off my bike or some other cars would have crashed they would have done something. AAAAAHHH. what is wrong with people, this has severely knocked my confidence about going out on my bike alone and god knows it took ages to build up in the first place. thanks for the rant.

The Police really mean, only minor offences were committed and without witness's it's not worth their time to investigate.

I would assume any sexual comments would be classed as sexual harassment which is a reasonably serious offence, again witness's needed as it would come down to your word against theirs.

Don't let the low brow mentally challenged Neanderthals numpties get to you, there probably upset about their shitty jobs and no futures.

There's plenty of morons about, but women seem to attract the worst kind I'm afraid.

A pretty lady at work started cycling last summer and soon stopped because of the number of youngs lads heckling her.

Always crude things like, 'I'd like to be your saddle' or 'you wanna ride me instead'.

Don't let it deter you. They'll soon get boredf if you do the same route everyday.

I don't condone violence either, BUT; go to the Police and you get told there's nothing they can do without witnesses, or some other excuse for non-action (probably because they are over-stretched manpower wise, and about to get much worse).

These wee scrotes are fully aware of that, and the lack of fear of the consequences of their actions is probably the reason why they feel free to behave as they like. If a few more of them got a smack on the jaw for their troubles then they might think twice before going down that route. Well done the cyclist, I say .

There are two options, no three, when faced with verbals.

1. Ignore, utterly and icily. Adopt a dowager duchess uprightness and just ride on.

2. Come up with a stock of witty putdowns as replies. I'm sure people here will help with that. If the perpertrator gets it, they get humiliated, if they don't, the slack jawed incomprehension will amuse you.

3. Develop a repertoire of swearing that would embarrass a navvy. And a bellow to deliver it - high pitched furious squeaking just doesn't do it)

Whatever you do, remember, they have tiny, tiny penises.

Of course, the danger is the mucking about swerving into you. That ought to be assualt I think, isn't the fear of being hurt technically assault? Anyway, if it becomes necessary, remember that discretion is the better part of valour. Turn off down a side street, or if you can do so safely, just pull over and stop, and watch them drive off. If confident enough, salute them with one or more fingers as they do.

(Funnily enough, I don't recall ever being verbally harrassed in sexual terms while on my bike. I must be really ugly!)

+ 1. I tried telling my husband how much police do not give a frack about cyclists getting attacked (based on a number of occasions), he was genuinely shocked by it.

hobbygirl - it might be worth your while just altering your route just for a few weeks, I know I will probably get people yelling at me that 'you have the right to go wherever you like' , but it might be nice not to think about travelling on the same road as them?

Feel free to rant as much as you like - this fracking motorcyclist passed me within inches last night and before you could say 'f*ckwit' the blues and two's had given chase. Bloody well made my day :becool:

An Airzound would sort them out. Just hold the button down and
1 they'll be that shocked that they won't know what to do next.
2 everybody within about 150 yards will turn around to see what's going on.

I think that might be the only thing that'll work.

I'd also complain to the police. Complain to the IPCC! A crime WAS committed and the police fobbed you off - that is NOT acceptable AT ALL.

i have reported them to the police and the police said they can do nothing because no crime was commited!

If I were to approach someone in the street, say something offensive and put them in a situation that made them feel threatened, I could be charged for assault.

Put both parties in vehicles and suddenly it's ok, even if one is a bike.

Like Jezton says, I'd get your complaining hat on.

Not normally a subject I would make a comment on, but....my better half commutes very long distances, 95% of which is on quiet country lanes, if she were to suffer abuse then she would be alone. Retaliation is NOT the answer, some of these neanderthals would just see it as an opportunity to escalate the abuse or worse. I have no doubt at all that any action towards them by you would probably incite them further.
Your best friend, assuming you do not have a camcorder is the camera on your mobile [assuming you have one of those], if it records video clips even better. Take pictures, and try and get the registration, do not react. We are lucky living where we do as the vast majority of drivers round here are polite. It's very different for a bloke but it shouldn't be.
Don't give up Hobbygirl, cycling numbers are going up, and the more cyclists there are the safer it gets, in all respects. I've ridden fairly extensively on the continent [used to live there] and this sort of behaviour is rare to non existent. There are times when I hate this country.
