My 105 5700 fd that i recently fitted works fine up and down the chainset but when i try to trim the fd with the first click i get nothing, next click it will drop to the inner ring. Ive attempted to adjust the tension on the cable to see if that would make any difference but with no joy. Any suggestions?

My Claris front mech does the same thing.

Sounds as if the cable tension has been wrongly set which would give this problem.
Parktools repair section gives instructions on how to set this.

It takes some fiddling. I found the shimano instructions didn't really work for me. I got a Tiagra to trim fine first time, but an Ultegra I have only just started getting to work properly.
Basically the first movement of the FD from small to large shouldn't hit the end stop. There should be a little more left so when you move the lever it just nudges over a bit. Then it leaves you some movement to trim back.
Hope that helps.

Sounds the same as my 105 double setup @jagman.2003. First click trims outboard of the small chain-ring, next click shifts to large chain-ring and then there's another slight click that trims outboard of the large chain-ring to give maybe an extra 2mm clearance, all off the larger shift lever.
