This is my favourite internet question. The only correct answer to your question is; you will have to visit a shop and try one for size.

Giant fcr hybrid

I thought it would be more scientific than try it.

It can get scientific, and very complicated, and someone will be along soon to tell you that they can tell you what size bike you need. but they will only be guessing.

Shall i give you an example of why you need to visit a shop. you 'may' fall between sizes (i think you do by the way) and you will have a choice between the medium or the large. the medium will fit and so will the large. Without sitting astride one at the very least, you won't know. Its a bit like buying shoes, the right size might not fit right, so you might have to buy a 'wrong' size because they fit better.

One shop said small the other medium. I like to set my bike the highest I can ride as otherwise my knees complain. I also like to be quite stetched out rather than upright. My plan is to pick up used hybrid now to replace my slick tyred mtb. Then next year use the c2w to get a good rood bike. My commute is 11k each way but I want to extend this as exercise. Can't do the c2w till next year.

I've been told the large would be too big but looks like I'm just borderline on the giant sizing chart. I guess your right I'll have to go try one.

Just call me Chris...
I'm a similar size to yourself. I bought mine (but it's an SCR) from t'internet and, to be honest, I think I should have gone for the large.
At 5' 11" though, I'm pretty much slap bang in the middle of the size range so, as above, you'd have to try one to be sure.

I must admit I'd never buy a bike off the internet again without having tried the size out first.

My Dad bought an FCR from my LBS. I can't remember what size he chose out of the two but I remember it wasn't the size we thought it would be that was most comfortable.
They're great bikes BTW

You could try this:

if you're not happy with the very sensible advice given above. (i mean above posters)
Take note of seat tube length AND cross tube length primarily.

But, really, what u should do is - give a toss about brands (giant, spesh, kona, etc), and what u think u might like. Go to a bike shop with a good range and sit on a few you like the look of. Give 'em your credit card and take a test-drive. Go to another shop and do the same. And another, if u like (it's fun, and staff are helpful cos bike people love talking about bikes). Narrow the choice down. Do a bit of homework on t'internet. Order/buy the sob. It's a lot of money, so get it right.

I just wanted to chat about it. All advice above noted, but I'm not getting a new bike, but a used one. The LBS have no used bikes anywhere. I've actually sat on a good few bikes in the shops, while I waiting for the c2w to happen. The sizing advice in the lbs has varied so much I was a bit wary of it tbh. But I'm buying used for now and not in a lbs, because they've no used stock. I'll wait till the new year to get new more expensive bike.

Anyway tried a large FCR 3 tonight, and it felt fine, in fact I'll have to raise up the saddle! Reach was good. I bought it anyway. I'll drop it in for a service and a tidy up to the local bike mechanic. From monday I'll be cycling most days, and I need a spare. I only started commuting on my old MTB (16yrs old) last year and while in great nick, I've just noticed when cleaning it, that theres rust under the paint in a few places. I've never noticed it before, so I guess its new.

TBH I didn't know what bike to get. Go for comfort, or just go for something a bit harder even a road bike.. So the FCR is a test to see how I get on. I'll in a few weeks, if I want a road bike or something softer. Used it wasn't expensive and if I don't like it I'll just sell it on for not much less then I bought it. Hopefully by the new year I'll have a better idea of what to get on the c2w.

If your planning on doing many miles on the road and not sticking to sub 20 mile country-esque-lanes then a road bike is a great step up from the MTB. You could play it safer and get a hybrid to see if you like the experience, most people once they get into cycling tend to eventually get a road bike and wish they had done sooner.
