Is anyone else afflicted by the dreaded anal blight?

I'm affected roughly every 4 or 5 years, for a few days; however, I've managed to cycle to work OK today without any aggravated symptoms.

Keep calm and carry on!

I have IBS so yes, but never had them overlap with cycling (one of my biggest fears)

Anusol is good and get it on early (when it feels funny not when the pile is there) but makes a god awful mess (I have a few pairs of old pants for this purpose)

I favour Germoloids myself. I was slapping it on liberally 'til I saw the info on the tube telling you to limit it to four applications a day!

I wondered why I was numb from the waste down...

@ Mister P: Symptoms? Oh, you'll know if you have them! Sometimes just a very sharp pain in the region of the old 'pearly king,' sometimes a horrible lump resembling a miniature hernia will manifest itself. But always the pain.

I see that more as a guideline than a rule ;) oh and they can become massive external bloodclots if they go on too long which is why I'm pro early regular and excessive medication

Sensitive topic this isn't it?

Heheh

I had major issues with it for a long while - I was eating well with lots of fibre, drinking plenty, exercising regularly, sleeping enough, not straining when having a poo and doing all the things that should keep our 'friends of the bumhole' away...however at the time I was in a very stressful job. The GP prescribed Anusol and this tube of painkilling stuff which made no difference as really it wasn't related to constipation at all. In the end I had to have surgery to remove the piles as they got so painful and irritable. Not a pleasant experience.

Sadly, after a a bit of time off to recover from surgery I went back to work and within two weeks they had returned...no longer in the job and certainly no problems like that again. The odd case every now and then but never really an issue.

My tuppence worth if you're following the above at keeping yourself healthy, try and see if there is anything at all that triggers it ie stress or a type of food.

Good luck mate and if it becomes really troublesome go to your GP.

Mister P - the symptoms are:

to the OP worth going to get checked in case there is underlying other issues

Symptoms
Bleeding during bowel movements, itching, and rectal pain are the most common hemorrhoid symptoms.

External hemorrhoids
Rectal pain occurs mainly with external hemorrhoids. Blood may pool under theskin, forming a hard, painful lump. This is called a thrombosed, or clotted, hemorrhoid. You might also notice streaks of blood on the toilet paper after straining to pass a stool.

Internal hemorrhoids
The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is rectal bleeding. You may find bright red streaks of blood on the toilet paper or bright red blood in the toilet bowl after having a normal bowel movement. Blood also may be visible on the surface of the stool.

Other symptoms of internal hemorrhoids may include:

  • Itching. This is a frequent complaint, because internal hemorrhoids often seep mucus, which can irritate the anal skin and cause itching.
  • Skin irritation. Large hemorrhoids that bulge from the anus may secrete mucus, causing mild irritation.
  • Discomfort. You may still feel the urge to pass stool right after having a bowel movement. This uncomfortable feeling is caused by the bulging of the hemorrhoid in the end portion of the large intestine (anal canal). In general, the larger the hemorrhoid, the greater the discomfort.
  • Pain. Most internal hemorrhoids are not painful. But large hemorrhoids that bulge from the anus may become painful if they swell and are squeezed by the muscles that control the anus. Severe pain may be a sign that the blood supply to the hemorrhoid is being cut off (strangulated hemorrhoid). Emergency treatment is needed.
Rectal bleeding and pain and recent changes in bowel habits are also symptoms ofcolon, rectal, or anal cancer. People who have these symptoms, especially those age 50 or older or those with a family history of colon cancer, should talk to their health professional.

Other conditions with symptoms similar to hemorrhoids include anal fissures, anal fistulas, colon polyps, rectal prolapse, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

generally causes would be either hard or runny stools, or that combination of both you can get with an ibs attack. I think I may have some internal ones (which is new) atm so I'm going for a just in case application

*Deep breath* - I'm Stephenite and i'm a haemorrhoids sufferer.

I've been getting them increasingly more often, and increasingly bothersome for about 15 - 20 years. This recent attack has been persistent enough for me to bring it up with the doctor. The medication hasn't worked so it's a new appointment later this week. I think the doc is going to take a look!

:shy:

I'm not looking forward to it one bit.

Symptoms are:

A feeling that you are shitting broken glass

Go to the docs. i once had bleeding from my arse (after a bad case of food poisoning) so booked to see someone. Everyone has a small amount of piles inside their arse (the consultant told me this while he was telling me i have a "normal amount of piles" whilst looking up my arse using some kind of periscope... not embarrassing at all LOL!) but if they are around your peanut and causing you problems every 4 or 5 days that's not really good.

As said, go to the docs, they really don't mind looking up your arse using a periscope. in fact, i think they secretly enjoy it, they can make believe they are a submarine captain or something, and it really makes their day.
