F/S - Mavic Ksyrium SL 09 Wheelset + Tyres/Tubes

Here we have the rather reluctant sale of my Mavic Ksyrium SL 09 clincher wheels, fitted with a Shimano freehub, and of course the Mavic OE skewers. Plus, a pair of brand new Vittoria Rubino Pro Slick 23mm tyres and also a pair of brand new Kenda Ultralite inner tubes are all included in the sale package.

I purchased these wheels ten months ago from my local LBS at a cost of just under £700 for the pair, that’s excluding the tyres and tubes. I already have a pair of the Ksyrium ES wheels and I intended to fit the SL’s to one of my other bikes, but I have just bought a new track bike so I need to sell these in order to fund it!!

They saw very little dry use last summer, with just a few hundred miles usage. Needless to say they are perfect in every aspect and exactly as I took delivery of them from the shop. There no marks at all on any of the braking surfaces, both wheels are 100% true.

I'm looking for £500 for the wheel set and tyres/tubes, plus any carriage at cost. Or more than welcome for you to collect?

They are indeed, but not only in looks but in performance as well. As I mention in my ad, I also have the ES version, which are an identical specification.

I've used the ES's on my Audax bike for the last four years or so and I've done thousands of very happy miles on them, and for climbing they are nothing short of brilliant!

It truly breaks my heart to sell them, but I've gone rather OTT in the spending department recently, what with the new Ridley training frame, plus the associated bits and bobs that went with the frame swop over, then there's the new Fuji track bike as well. :biggrin:

So they really need to go, as the settee is starting to get uncomfortable....:smile:

I started a discussion on quality wheels last week; the general opinion seemed to be that although they might only save you a few seconds, the reward is in the feel and quality of the ride and the climbing. You're an experienced cyclist - try to describe for me how they feel compared with a cheaper wheel..... how do they enhance your climbing? Are they just stiffer?

Crumbs.....where do you start?

Its a bit like trying to describe how a steel framed bike rides when compared to a aluminium one, until you have tried it words alone simply cannot describe it.

But in saying that, I'll do my best to answer your question. As you have already mentioned, the biggest and most noticeable difference will be the rolling weight and more so when climbing, which is why they make brilliant Audax wheels.

But in conjunction with the weight loss you also need stiffness in order to overcome the numerous stresses and strains when subjecting the wheels to lateral loading, getting out of the saddle for example.

The idea is that a good set of wheels (and the frame for that matter) will be to transmit all of the energy from your legs down to the rear wheel the least amount of wasted energy as possible. But anyone can make a stiff wheel, but if its to stiff then of course they are prone to breaking spokes, this is where the skill is.

The SL's front wheel has radial spoking on the front wheel, which makes it very stiff and combined with the flat bladed spokes make it very aerodynamic as well. The centre section of the front is carbon fibre, with billet aluminium bearing caps. Trust me, when I say that the front wheel is so light it is simply unbelievable!! Only 645g's in fact!

The rear wheel has radial spoking on the drive side and crossed spoking on the other side, again with flat bladed spokes. The entire hub is machined from billet aluminium, and again it is incredibly light. Only 840g to be exact!

I don't know if I have really answered your question or not? But my only suggestion would be to try a decent set of wheels, and then see for yourself. Then try and describe in your own words why they are so much better?

IMHO for an all round wheel the SL's cannot be beaten, not only in looks but in overall performance as well.

In fact, I'm in two minds if I do really "need" to sell them now...........:biggrin:

Alan, I'm interested but it's a family budget issue. Back in a day or so and if you find a buyer in the meantime, so be it.
