Has anyone drilled a 531 frame and put M5 rivnuts in to create an extra bottle cage mount?

I've not had good experience with the various cheap strap-on type mountings (Decathlon & Elite). I bought an R&K one, but whilst quite solid the bottle sticks out too far. I was thinking about a BikeBuddy on the seat tube, but it won't match the existing mount on the down tube..... and for very little more money I could buy a rivnut tool and have the ability to add permanent mounts to the several other bikes in our family stable that are lacking even one mount.

I think I'd shy away from doing this on a 531C frame, but the 531ST tubeset on the Galaxy is a little more robust....

What say you good folks out there?

I had to Google for M5 rivnuts to see what you were on about (must be a sheltered life). Well they look the business and seem to be able to hold or grip on 1mm thickness so they should work. Do you have an old frame to try first? Let us know how you get on.

Watch out folks! Much of them tubes are well under 1mm thick...

I have added a second cage using a couple of hose clips. Rock solid.

The type which is sold for garden hoses etc. I think it was the biggest diameter when I got them at B&Q. Careful with these as they could mark the paintwork

Rivnuts are used in the original build on the frame - I know this because I've had one come loose and had to use a hub & QR as a makeshift Rivnut tool to get it to grip again. So I'm not sure how it could wreck the frame? The problem with the topeak cage mount is the same as the R&K one.... the bottle sticks out too far.

Go for it with the Rivnuts - I've fitted loads of them to a variety of frames on my bikes without problem.

The "superglue" and "double-sided tape" suggestions would seem to point towards lost cages and bottles rather quickly to me .....

Someone asked a similar question a few months ago so I pointed the in the direction of the following website, you may get some alternative ideas:-

Water bottle holders are not my favourite subject though at the moment, went out MTB'ing yesterday as I can not get out on the road bike, we got stuck in the snow and had to resort to carrying the bikes, my water bottle holder broke off so I throw it away, then a minute later recalled that it actually slides onto a mounting and can be detached from the bike. I then tried to recall where it had landed in the snow but could find no trace of it, so I now need to fit another holder. Luckily I have two spare.

Great link Zacklaws, have saved it for future reference. Shame that the most simple fittings - the ones that look a bit like seat post clamps -

don't have a link that works, or name/make - anyone have any leads?

Those look the business....but for 30.9mm set posts only.... and no link to buy.
and how would you get them on to the frame tubes?

They reminded me of adapters for braze-on FDs though....I might investigate to see whether any of those can be adapted first.
