Exploding inner

On instruction from a higher authority I was giving the daughters, abandoned, Raleigh mock-MB a quick check prior to gifting it to a neighbours grand-child. Tyre pumped up to 50psi - sudden very, very loud bang. SWMBO blissfuly unaware as I recovered my senses. I thought the police would be called - but our nearest neighbour is even deafer.

Perhaps a factor was the inner had been untroubled for 14 years:smile: Let that be a lesson to idlers. FWIW.

yes the rubber rots - it was possibly not within the tyre fully and managed to escape resulting in the bang - better to happen before the kid was riding down a hill!

I was out on a ride when I picked up a puncture. I had patches but no pump (don't ask) but there was a garage workshop down the road so I went in to ask for a lend of their arline. Two seconds on that and the whole thing exploded, I looked under his bench and they had a MASSIVE reservoir which was up to 180psi so my little tyre never stood a chance. The garage owner thanked me for waking up one of his mechanics though.

50psi is quite a lot for a child's bike isn't it?

they tend to have fat tyres and they don;t weigh an awful lot

a 14 year old tube is a factor mind, what are the tyres and brake blocks and cables like?
