Can't spell, Can't Punctuate....Sue Me
I'm using the 29er for commuting duties with sammy slick cylocross tyres - but as i'm only using them on tarmac cycle paths, they are already starting to wear on the central tread.

I want to swap them out for something, but the cycle paths at the moment are covered in wet leaves, branches etc and general quite greasy.

I want to use minimum 32mm, so should i switch them to gatorskins or something else??

ps no marathon pluses please

I swapped out the Sammy slicks on my CX bike last year , good tyres that roll really well on tarmac but like you say wear quick and thorns seem to penetrate them quite easy this time of year, don't like gators myself , I had M pluses sitting so used them but when and if I ever wear them out I will go with Durano pluses.

Vittoria Radonneur are another not M+ option, I had some on a CX bike a few years back used generally on tarmac and lightly off piste in very leaf strewn country parkland without a worry of losing it or it slipping when I stamped on the pedals . A decently priced good rolling tyre, no p* issues but they were more of a sod to get on than any Marathon I've ever done.

Just one of the other tyres in the Marathon range (regular, M Racer, M deluxe, etc) you don't like M+s and want something with a bit of grip? The Racers are nearly 1/3 the weight of M+s - but not much grip. M Deluxes have decent amount of tread, but are expensive - still about half the weight of M+s. They are all commuting/touring tyres at heart so should last a while.

Hi,

FWIW wear on the central tread is not an issue if you only use them for
tarmac commuting, it is only is if you want to use them more off road also.

Unless you want to save them for off roading its difficult to suggest
a better winter tyre, if anything I'd swap them out over the spring
and summer and keep them for the autumn and winter.

i.e. road tyres, not cyclocross for spring and summer commuting.

I'd suggest plain Marathons. 32mm is IMHO the best width for them as the 35s are a bit heavy and the 28s ride a bit hard. If you want complete slicks then the sammy's above would work, or also there are Continental Sport Contacts, though i found them to be slower and less grippy than the Marathons.

Panracer Pasellas are another decent choice but I think they stop at 28mm. Or on a completely different tack there's Schwalbe Big Apples for a really plush ride.

Land Cruisers are nigh on indestructible, but heavy as. Better off-road than Marathons, but still quite fast rolling on tarmac.

If you want fast, light and universal Rocket Rons are also available in 33mm. 320 g.

I presently use 32mm marathons without the plus. Lighter and IMO better ride and better road holding than the plusses. So far 4000 miles with one puncture - caused by a discarded syringe which I suspect would have gone through any tyre.

Decided to stick with the sammys for now. Then will switch to gator hardshells in the spring. I have a 2nd set of wheels with mountain kings on for the off road fun.
