I recently bought a bike from Evans and was told I would receive a free 6 week service on the bike; however I have run slightly over the 6 week period and they have not been in touch with me about this.

If I gave them a call and asked to book in for my free service, would I be charged for the service as I have had the bike longer than 6 weeks? (I've had it about 7 and a half weeks). I can't find anywhere that says in the small print that the free check-up is only to be within the first 6 weeks although, admittedly, I have not read through the little booklet I was given when I got my bike - I have only checked online.

Any responses are much appreciated.

Thanks!

Why don't you phone them and see?

I imagine it is a free service, and as the service will be most use after the bike has been 'run in' for 6 weeks, they call it a 6 week service. So I think it is more like a free service after 6 weeks.

Give them a call.
(I wouldn't expect them to call you)

You'll be fine- it tends to be 'first service free at 6-8 weeks' in most bike shops, how they choose to word it is up to them.

My LBS does this too, but since I was enjoying my new bike so much and nothing went wrong, I forgot all about it for 1000 miles

Fast and careful!
we have taken bikes back for checks at 3 months for the check and well ridden,I take will take new bikes back after two days to get gear tweaks done, the reason for the checks is readjust gears brakes cables etc,i like clean smooth sounds from gearing, and have had new cables adjusted up to 4 times after cable replacements to get it right, thats why i choose my local bike shop, they get on with it

I took my bike back for a free service after a lot longer than 6 weeks and that was not a problem. I hadn't done much more than 100 miles though. You will be OK.

Mine stated in the book that it had to be up too six weeks but when I called they told me to leave it a bit longer . I took it back after 12 weeks ish with loads of niggles and got it back free of all of them  I go
I got the feeling that the six week service is for the family types that take the kids around the park at the weekend on the bikes rather than people riding daily .
I also wouldn't expect them to call me .

I called up today and booked in for my service tomorrow evening so we'll find out if they're going to do it for me or not! Just in time really as a problem with the chain and the gearing has developed over the last few days. Hopefully they'll do it for free!

Just to update you all, I got my bike back today after taking it in on Thursday for its service. It had been 8 weeks since buying it and I'd done nearly 1000 miles on it (which they didn't know) and I got it back with a new chain link in as the chain was slipping on my last outing and they've adjusted the brakes and gears and given everything a once over to make sure it's alright ... Totally free of charge

Tbh, i think both you and the shop should be happier the more miles the bike has done before it goes back for the once over. The further it's gone the more likely problems will arise and that's better for both of you. Chapeau on 1000 miles in 8 weeks.
