Just wanted to say what an excellent bunch of guys. i had a problem with my bike on Weds where the chain came off got jammed and twisted and ended up bending itself and chewing the frame. (about 3 weeks after its 1st service) Took it back to Evans the next day and they offered to fix the derailleur which caused the issue and replace the chain. had the bike 8weeks now and just wasnt happy with the bike at all. Ruined my confidence as everytime i changed the gear i thought it would slip off. (it had done this before a few times with not much damage). So i politely asked them to change the bike, but they were more happy to fix my current bike. The manager than advised they will check in the morning to get me new bits and a new frame for replacement or a new bike, whichever cost least. Got a message friday saying the bike i got 2010 Cannondale Badboy was discontinued but if i paid £100 they would give me a model worth more than twice of my current bike. went in today and picked it up £100 later with excellent service and even set it all up for me and invited me back if any issues. Really happy overall as i was disheartened about riding all together on Thursday.

Which Evans store was it?
Which bike did you get?

I've always had great customer service from Evans.

Yes, it's opposite West Croydon Station.
Geoffrey Butler is still in south croydon, and they own Bike Plus further down near purely.
There is also Roberts ( i think that is the name) in the back roads by east croydon station, they build classic road frames.
The big shop you refer to near GB is probably Cycle King, pretty good for cheap bikes and the mechanic there 10 years ago was ace.

In between here and there
My nearest to work is the Gatwick Warehouse, not too keen on it since the refit. They have less on display now, in fact I would say they have less accessories than a normal Evans I know I can order it from the PC in store but you feel kind of commited rather than browsing. As it is their H/O and main warehouse you would think it would be their flagship store.

Also their servicing seems out of this world in pricing £13.95 to change a Tyre, what ten minutes if that in a workshop thats £80+ per hour labour charge! Yet they charge £13.95 to renew all cables doesn't make much sense to me.

The top service is £129. The store is full of A4 sheets of disclaimers about having your bike stolen whilst leaving it for a service which doesn't fill me with confidence either.

My bike was set up poorly no one had checked the spoke tension so clicking and then buckled wheel, the Cycle fit was a ride round the car park with the sales person saying "yeah your arm are bent correctly that one fits you" again a chain of stores like Evan that trys to be like a LBS you would think they would offer proper bike fittings.

With hindsight I would have given my £1500 to someone else. Problem is you really only start to learn about bikes and where you should buy them once you have one.

I've never been that keen on Evans.

I ordered my first bike with them and eventually had to cancel it they messed around so much.

Had no option but to buy my road bike from there (LBS was out of stock and not getting any more in). After riding it for the first time the brakes weren't working right. They would consistently rub against the rim and no matter how much I adjusted it, it just went back to rubbing against the rim. When I took it back to Evans the bike was 2 weeks old. The guy did the patronising routine (sometimes being a female is a real disadvantage, especially when I am very erm youthful looking for my age, get refused scratchcards on a regular basis!) and told me it needed it's 1st service!! He said it was cable stretch when it blatantly wasn't.

Took a lot of arguing to get that one fixed.
