Hi All,

I'm new to cycling - well apart from my youth when I cycled everywhere, and am looking forward to getting out and about doing some road cycling, and using the national cycle routes that are quite close by. I hope to:-

1. Get a bit fitter
2. Enjoy my surroundings more (I live in Glasgow, and I'm vaguely aware that there are some lovely places to the North - I just never quite get to them)
3. Just enjoy being on my own, not working, not shepherding kids around, not doing housework. Just being out there (does that sound selfish)
4. Prompt myself to give up the demon weed

My kit bag consists of...

1. Giant Central Park hybrid bike (a freebie from my sis, who can't use it anymore)
2. Helmet
3. Pair of cycling shorts and a weatherproof jacket
4. A lock
5. A puncture repair kit
6. A pump
7. A rucksack with a bottle of water in it

Is there anything else anyone would vew as essential to a beginner? I am a bit of a gadget freak (probably not alone here :-), but i'm looking at road bikes, SPD pedals/shoes, bottle racks, panniers, tights etc and thinking I should actually get some miles under the belt before I can really justify (or indeed need) any of the "goodies" on offer

Is there anything you'd recommened as a "don't even start without..." item that I should think about.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the replies!

I have a multi tool and a set of allen keys that came with the bike, so hopefully will be alright

Yep, lights are possibly a good idea. I'm not planning on too much night time riding just yet (although living in Glasgow, the daylight hours are 11am-1pm so it's probably worth thinking about).

While I kind of wish youd have told me I needed loads of kit, tonnes of gadgets, a new £999 road bike (I could have shown it to my wife and said "Well I don't want to do it unsafely"), those replies are much apreciated

But one thing ... you've got me scared now. Who's Ludwig and did he have a bad experience with a rucksack as a child!!!!

Cheers
