I'm looking for some baggy mountain biking shorts with a removable padding for commuting. I heard good things about the Endura Hummvees but reviews seem to say that they're 'shockingly heavy' which isn't too good for Summer riding.

Does anyone know of any, preferably lighter, alternatives?

I like Gore Plaster shorts.

I've got a pair of Humvees, can say I've ever had any problems lifting them. :training:

The new ones for this year have a thinner, teflon coated material and zipped leg vents( and they've changed the previous press-stud waist fastener to a much better button).

Are these the new ones? http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Endura-Hummvee-Baggy-Cycling-Shorts_15178.htm Also, what's the padding like?

Certainly look like it. The padding is a separate padded liner which fastens to the outers with multiple sets of small press studs round the waistband. It's pretty well padded, but I'm not convinced the liner is massively durable - its a very thin lycra mesh. TBH I've not worn mine out yet, but I think it will be the first thing to go, when that happens I'll simply wear padded shorts under the humvees.

With regards to the sizing I'm 6'2" with a 35" waist, the L is fractionally too small and the XL is slightly too big - I've gone for the XL, but I tried them on before buying.

Stick with the Humvees - I've two pair of 3/4 length ones and they are definitely not heavy. In fact they are the opposite IMO.
Cracking bits of kit and well worth the every penny.

Endura's own sizing guide might make more sense...

Get some cheap light 3/4 shorts from decathlon, sportdirect, Tenn, TK Maxx or similar and then just wear your padded shorts underneath? Perhaps go to your LBS that sells Hummvees, try them on, and buy them if they are right?

got a pair of Humvees, not bad, not lightweight neither I would say but they ain`t heavy. The inner shorts are not bad but were uber tight on my mahoosive thighs  . Was not keen on the inner shorts only wore them once and that was it. The original belt was pretty poor but it would appear they have changed it for this year.

I noticed the other day that Endura do a Humvee Lite, which I wouldn't mind trying for the summer. Having said that, I've been using my Humvees for two or three months now, and only really found them too warm once, last Friday, when the temperature had climbed to the mid 30's C.

I just wear regular cycling shorts or padded undershorts and a pair of very thin Ronhill running shorts over them that I have removed the brief liner out of. I thought about Humvees as I used to have the long ones, but I prefer Ronhill Bikesters to them, so thought I would try this combination for shorts.

I have these, use them regularly the liner/padding is good but i actually prefer to wear my altura cycling shorts undernearth them instead of the liner that came with them, I noticed on the weekend that when sweating my phone in my pocket had picked up a bit of moisture, this hasnt occured before as I usually wear the altura's.. as someone already said they are thin, good shorts not the best liner imho.

Long, long, long overdue.

As to the OP, Edinburgh Bicycle Co-Op own brand ones aint bad.
