End caps for outer housing with tips

Hi All,
Fitting a new rear derailleur which comes with housing and an additional housing cap with a long tip. What is the point of this? Is it just to give more stability and guidance to the shifter cable going back towards the frame?

bit more protection from crap getting in between inner & outer cable thus keeping it all as low friction as possible.
