Encouragement goes a long way

Popped into my LBS to get an inner tube and the guy who served me said he'd passed me in his car on the way in and said some very nice things about my speed and the fact that I didn't let the traffic push me into the side of the road.


It might have been a sales line, but it made my afternoon, nonetheless.

I remember when i'd not long started getting serious about 10 years ago. I was grinding along, fair pace when this guy all kitted up on a Cannondale slid up alongside me and we chatted for a mile. I admired his bike and felt slightly embarrassed by my (at the time) cheap Raleigh Chimera. I said something along the lines of 'its only a cheapy compared to yours'....he replied, 'whatever it is, you're doing ok, believe me'
Gave me a huge lift to hear a 'serious' cyclist give words of encouragement.

Then he blitzed off into the horizon

A few words of encouragement doesn't cost much and passes on good vibes.

I sometimes slow for a chinwag with other cyclists and if they're going well I ask them what they put on their cornflakes that morning.

A cycle club picked me up one morning whilst I was on my way to work, and they chatted to me all the way there. I just think all cyclists are nice people

That reminds me - I must pay my lbs a visit soon and get a new pair of mudguards. They like me there - last time I went in to get a ball-bearing and came out with a Trek Pilot.

On the first long trip I did (about a week ago exactly), I was going up this horribly huge ( read: average ) hill and couldn't make it on the bike. I felt awful, having to hoof it up to the top- but then, just as I was about there, another cyclist came zipping by. He laughed and said "Almost there!" and it cheered me up immensely.
