For a while I've been looking for a bike just to potter about on with the Mrs and nephews at weekends and one that would also double up as one I could take to frequent trips to the Lakes and maybe commuting in the winter.

I have come up short looking for a decent 2nd hand one really and have pretty much narrowed it down to a Carrera Subway, currently £260 at Halfrauds, and Edinburgh's Revolution Trailfinder at £250. Both look pretty similar really and will take the combination of tracks/trails and roads pretty well I feel.

Any views on which is the better machine? Or an alternative that's cheaper or certainly no dearer than these. Not bothered if it's like these as more of a hybrid or a MTB that I can fit with slick tyres really.

As an aside I can't seem to find the Edinburgh Revolution Courier anymore as that would have been worth a look. It may be me on their site though not seeing the wood for the trees - do they still make it??

When I was looking a couple of months ago, the best 'cheapest' hybrid all-rounder seemed to be the Kona Smoke http://www.evanscycles.com/products...oogle&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=froogle

Also, Edinburgh have a bike on offer at the moment but only in 22'' size, the Pathfinder '09 (although the suspension fork is a bit of a shame)

I've seen a Smoke and it's a nice looking bike.

Can't help with your main query but the Revolution Courier Single, Courier Race and Courier Race Disc are all in the 'Commuter/Leisure - Speed' category alongside bikes like the Specialized Sirrus.

Bugger. Have they just stopped making them? It would be a shame if so as they were great bikes and I wish I had bought one now.

Had my Carrera Subway Ladies Ltd edition in white for 18 months and it's been fab. Have made sure that I've kept it up together and my local bike shop has done a super job of servicing it for me every 6 months or so.
