I've been using the Edge 305 and more recently 705 to record training data. I'm still not happy with my choice of software to upload to ( sportracks; very good but endless bugs), and wonder what software you use to upload your garmin data to?

Only mapmyride at the moment. Training Centre is useless and the route traces never matched up to what roads were visible.

Out of interest, do you think the upgrade to a 705 if worth it (currently 205)? I'm considering the 705 + PowerTap route where I'll probably use WKO+. Main concern is the base map - does it just deal with A roads like TC or is there a bit more detail than that?

Sporttracks here, been using it for 3 years or so and haven't discovered any bugs that would stop me from using it.

I found SportTracks good too. I even ran it on a Linux box for a while, but it was too slow in that environment.

You can load an Edge direct to MotionBased too (Mac & windows). Garmin get some stick but I find MB suits my purposes. I log my rides into GTC too but only really out of habit, I've got around 3 years of data in there now and it's pretty sluggish!

I think the 705 is very good, albeit rather expensive. The mapping on the unit is more detailed than TC, but to get full mapping facilities (more detail, plus features like searching for the neares cafe) you have to get mapsource which adds to the expense. Mind you, I do get detailed mapping of all of Europe.

I got a 705 for Xmas and just installed the Training Centre. I had not realised you could use something else. I have the SD card version of the map so cannot use it on my laptop.

If I used sportrack I presume that I get access to the same data as TC but with a better map.

Gavin, Sportracks is much better than TC, so long as you're happy to configure it to your requirements. Mapping wise, it depends on what you've got on your PC; if you have mapsource it'll be available in TC, but again, the options for mapping views etc. are better in Sportracks. I usually praise Sportracks very highly, but in the last couple of weeks there have been a couple of niggles with it (see their forum), which can be worked round but spoil the easy, automatic functioning of the software.

Just to clarify, Mapsource is free, it's the mapping you pay for. Mapsource is the PC based application that you use for viewing the maps.

I came to the conclusion several months ago that 'upgading' to an Edge from a Legend was a mistake.

The legend datalogs the ride. Distance between logs, altitude, time etc. All this data can be pasted to Excel. The Edge data cannot without extensive manipulation.

Also, I have bought a PowerMonkey for the Edge to extend its life to 28+ hours.
The legend simply required a change of batteries.
