wife got me a 705 with hrm and cadence for crimbo and i love it but just a quick question about the calorie count

went for a ride the other day and when i looked in the garmin training centre it said i had burned 1043 calories in a time of 59.53.15 which to me sounds a lot for under an hour

i am 5.11" just under 17 stone here are the ride details recorded

distance 12.08 mile
total time 59.53.15
average pace 4.57 mile
average speed 12.1
max speed 23.1
total calories 1043
average heart rate 145 bpm
max heart rate 181 bpm
average cadence 72 rpm
total ascent 359 ft
total decent 369 ft

I also have a 705 which I also like a lot. However, I tend to ignore the calorie counter. Hopefully an expert will be along shortly to advise

Don't bother with the calorie counter - I never do. Work on 800-1000 cals per hour if riding at high intensity.

That's the only thing the 705 is rubbish at !

I recall Jimbo (late of this parish) once saying - after the to be expected and shrouded in mystery calculations and permutations - that the Edge 705 produced surprisingly accurate calorie burn figures, all things considered.

I personally don't pay any attention to them on my 305 but then it's not something that interests me.

At your weight to run 5 miles would be about 1000 calories, with your average heart rate, and the bike being more efficient i would say that it would be a reasonably accurate assessment.
