Quick question - if I don't download training data from my Edge 305 for a week will it save the whole lot and download it later?

I am off on a little 5 day jaunt soon and doubt I'll be able to hook the unit up to my laptop whilst I'm away from home. Will I lose the data or will the unit store everything until I'm able to download at a later date?

I have the Edge 205 which I think is mostly the same. It can retain loads of memory (easily manages a month - 1100 miles - for me before I clear it out). Doubt you'll have any problems for five days.

Sorry to highjack this thread – just how much memory does the 305 have? I have recently purchased a second hand one off a friend and I’m still getting to grips with it. I tried uploading a 30 mile course over the weekend onto it and it failed because there were 600 plus “course points”. I read somewhere on the internet that it can only hold 100 course points, (can’t remember if that is per route or not). My friend told me to include the course points, so I know where to turn etc. If I haven’t got them there how will I know when to turn – does it bleep at me if I’m off course? And why can’t it hold more course points if its got loads of memory?

See if the Garmin site answers your questions. It can store 1000 laps, 100 Waypoints and 50 routes. At 600 points, it sounds like your course was too dense. I uploaded a 110mile course on Saturday and navigated it ok on Sunday; I find it works better with limiting navigation points to particular junctions rather than every bend in the road. The way mine is set up it just bleeps at turn and the line automatically zooms in; I don't think you can navigate without having previously created them. I think that the reason that it can't hold more is its primarily aimed as a bike computer (although gps enabled) and devotes most of its memory to recording data (laps (speed, cadence, heartrate, elevation, etc)).

Hi Caz,

This confused me too - but it's easy to work around.

The Garmin will store 13000 track points (not course points), so all you have to do is plot your route with bikeroutetoaster/bikehike etc using trackpoints, not coursepoints. You will have to switch off a feature on the web which offers to 'add coursepoints at junctions' or whatever.

This will leave you with the breadcrumb trail to follow but no instructions like 'turn right'. However, when your breadcrumb trail takes a sharp right as you approach a t-junction, which way do you think you should turn?

You do have 100 coursepoints but I tend to only ever put a couple in (manually), for lunch stop/beer stop/cake stop (which means I can see how far till the next coursepoint, i.e. to my rest stop). It works absolutely fine for me like this. Give it a go!

Thanks HLab and Auntie Helen for your input, that's been very helpful. I will have to have a play with plotting a route or two and trying them out. No doubt I will get the hang of it!

By the way Auntie Helen, how on earth do you manage to do 1000+ miles a month, you must have a very understanding hubby/family? I've been watching your progress on Cyclogs - well done. My target is 250+ per month, I think I'd die if I tried doing your target!

Understanding hubby and dog (no kids), part time work from home, hubby has his own hobby (sailing). I do 2.5-3 hours per day on the bike, mainly using it instead of the car for shopping etc.
