hi guys...ok so picked my bike up today from a guy in leeds ( bought bike off ebay) it's a carrera zelos and it looks mint. great condition (looks wise). I even asked the guy why he was getting rid and he showed me his brand spanking carbon bike. All is good........got the gear i need, fit bottle cages and stuff.......decided to go do the 7 miler me and one of the lads did last week on mountain bike. Before i set off decide to just get a feel for the bike ( never had a road bike)......5 metres later a pedal drops off......bearings scattered on the floor, 5 metres later i find i cant change gear ( big cog, the back one works ) the pedals i can sort easy but any help with the front cog situation would really help....thanks guys......just in case you didn't know i'm an absolute beginner.

Oh my.

I'm assuming that you know how to change the gears? Little lever goes to a smaller cog, big lever changes onto a bigger cog. This works with both levers. Right for the rear cogs, left for the front.
If you are having problem indexing, there are great tutorials on youtube or you could pop the bike down to your Local Bike Shop (known on here as an LBS) and get the bike set up problem. They'll sort you pedals too.

ok so i can change from big cog to little cog now. To go from small to big i swing the brake lever......but to go from big to small i have to press the smaller trigger and swing the brake lever (while the little trigger is depressed)....and this drops the chain on to the smaller cog. this seems strange to you guys?

PUsh both to change one way, push the smaller to change the other way. Going form higher to lower gear is opposite for front and rear gears.

If one pedal is knackered I would assume the other one is on its way out, easy to replace just have to remember that they are Left and Right Threaded. As you bought the bike on E-Bay I would go to https://www.bikeregister.com and check the frame number against the data base just in case there is a problem, ie. stolen. The police upload stolen bike frame numbers to their Database thats if owners know their frame numbers
