Hi, I have a couple of long rides coming up and I need to get my sounds sorted. Can anyone suggest a decent set of earphones that works with an iPhone and allows me to skip tracks, volume control, make calls etc. thanks B

Leave the earphones at home and revel in the rich variety of natural sounds that you ride through. 'Surround sound' at its very best.

Weirdly I always used to be plugged into my ipod but as I've progressed over the last couple of months to really getting into biking I don't use it anymore. Sooner hear the cars coming up from behind then miss them when it's too late.

I used to belong to the minority who wore headphones while riding. I incorrectly thought that I relied on the 'beat' to maintain my tempo and cadence and that there was no way I could cycle well/efficiently/fast without it.

Fortunately/unfortunately I must possess the toxic sweat of a sewer residing, mutant rat, which seems to render any set I buy (acquire from apple) useless within a couple of weeks - so I gave up and never looked back. I will always now advocate cycling without. For many reasons.

Alas, whilst I understand and sympathise with the chaps above trying to staunchly outlaw the thread based on moral views that mirror my own, this isn't actually a debate on whether you should cycle with or without headphones - I think that's been done to death elsewhere.

So as we don't know that the poor chap isn't riding a closed road solo event, or even a turbo/indoor bike where the use of headphones would be morally fine to even the most anti-headphone among us, and also because it's none of our business, let's just be friendly and answer the question put in front of us (Although I would suggest moving to 'BAK&C').

I found that the Adidas/Sennheiser collaborations lasted about a year before they died... Have full iPod/iPhone functionality and don't fall out if you get the model with the band that goes around the back of your head.

They're not cheap though, and I got a refund on them twice (well into their life but still under warranty) on the basis that they're designed to be 'sports compatible' yet died (well the remote controls to change track/volume did) when exposed to my radioactive perspiration.

If all of these products are going to die through usage/moisture within some sort of shortish time (relative to your expectations) just by the nature of what they're being exposed to (all weathers and sweating into) then they certainly lasted a lot lot longer than the apple options... They just didn't last long enough for me to be happy to pay that price for.

I hope this helps.

I pretty much always ride with music, road and offroad. Just seems to add to the enjoyment of the whole thing.

Standard iphone earphones should handle all you need...
    1. If you're listening to music, toggle pause or play by tapping the center button once.
    2. To fast-forward a song, tap the center button twice and long-press on the second tap.
    3. To rewind a song, tap three times and long-press on the third tap.
    4. To skip a song, double tap.
    5. To go to the previous song, triple tap.
    6. If you have an incoming call, tap the center button once to answer. Tap again to hang up.

  1. To ignore an incoming call, long-press the center button. You'll hear two beeps to confirm that the caller was sent to voice mail.
  2. If you're on the phone and you get a new call, tap the center button once to switch calls. To end that new call, hold the center button down for 2 seconds.
  3. You can achieve supersteady shots by using your headphones as a shutter release. Tap the volume-up button to capture a photo.
  4. For iPhone 4S owners: prompt Siri by long-pressing the center button.

Motorola S9's have lasted me since August with no sign of failure. 6 hour battery life and no cable. Full controls and mic.

Have my eyes on a set of jaybird freedoms which are the first in ear bluetooth headphones to have better battery life than the S9's (think 8 hours of music) but they are quite expensive.

Don't bother with standard headphones, they won't last long with sweat.

If your riding with other people, leave the headphones at home!

How much are you looking to spend on headphones? I have just purchased a set of klipsch x10 and they are amazing. They were on sale in richer sounds for £130. I had a set of Bose before that and didn't really rate them. sennheiser would be a good brand to look at as well.

I would also steer clear of beats
