Hello, I need a bit of help please in choosing an e bike for my 23 yr old son, he's 6 foot 6 (200cm) tall and 23 stone (146kg) so a big unit.

Most ebikes have a weight limit or a height limit or both. I can't seem to find one that suits his needs

The bike can be mountain, commuter, folding, whatever as long as it's fit for purpose and sturdy (not a road bike)

It will be used for fitness/weight loss and would be light journeys along roads, tracks and trails, maybe 25 miles max, no extreme stuff and electric assistance for maybe some hilly bits so not a massive range needed.

I'd rather buy a reliable brand from an authorised dealer so there's a warranty and support.

I looked at a Himiway Zebra but a dealer told me the brand were withdrawing from the UK?? and I'm not convinced on the brand anyway, so that put me off. I thought the Cube Khatmandu may be ok but has a 135kg limit (inc bike) and am running out of ideas now

Budget would be under £3k.

Thanks

My friend bought a Sonder Camino from Alpkit and loves it. If I was in the market for an ebike, I'd start there.

I'd really recommend speaking to some dealers in the UK, preferably shops that only sell electric bikes as they would know best. I used www.theelectricbikeshop.co.uk (branches nationwide) recently and found them very helpful. The other main reason is you're really going to want to get him to sit on either the bike you want or something very similar so the fit can be tested.

My own thoughts would be to perhaps look at Cargo Bikes. As they are designed to move cargo not just a person most of them will have that capability to take the weight you need. One I saw is the Cube Longtail Hybrid, it looks pretty much like a normal bike and can take upto 200kgs. The issue though is height as that only goes to 6 foot 2 inch - but it may still be ok.

Thanks, I think I do need some specialist advice, what fits one box doesn't fit the other. I think one of the fat tyred folding bikes may be an option, I saw one called an E- go bike max plus on the pedal and chain website that has 150kg payload so emailed them to check the height limit but have had no reply

What sort of tracks and trails - e.g. he might be better off with a mountain bike - weight limits won't be an issue quite the same - some of it will be down to chucking it off mountains and getting 'air', so a decent hardtail MTB should be good - don't go Full suspension due to weight and cost.

Very light, local walkways/paths/public roads mainly flat, won't be doing jumps or anything

I have to admit I know little about electric bikes apart from the basics. Mid drive would be preferable to a wheel drive motor but your budget should preclude those.
23kg is very heavy and might preclude many road or even MTB types. Check the weight limits the manufacturers specify as it might affect their warranty.
As @wiggydiggy suggests a cargo bike might be the way to go as they'll be designed to carry a heavy load but won't look like a regular bike. Would he be okay with that?
Here's a review of some cargo e-bikes:

Some might bust your budget by a margin.
An XL size should work .
Good luck.

Thanks, to be honest he's not fussed what sort it is as long as it does the job, I just want to ensure it doesn't break or the motor burns out and there's no comeback because it was the wrong spec for him
