so could i get an old school dynamo like below
$T2eC16dHJHgFFlrgUsk0BSK(QS!jYQ~~60_35.JPG

or just make one out of a simple motor
like so http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3V-D-C-Mi...al_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item1c2191e4cf

and then solder it up to a garmin charging lead to charge it whilst peddling?

tbh, I wouldn't. You could get a regulator but its more hassle blah blah blah!
I'm not too sure that just running that motor generates leccy too I'm not good on that front, more circuits regs etc!

considering how a simple electric motor like that works and considering how a simple dynamo or genny works then why wouldn't it?

You would need to make sure that you can balance the supplied power coming from the dynamo, otherwise you would have spells when you were not charging and others where you could damage the Garmin.

It would not be sensible IMHO. There are USB charging arrangements such as the B&M Luxos and Ewerk systems, but they are rather expensive. You'd probably be better looking at a cache battery if you need to extend your \gamin's range, or get one of the Etrex series which takes AA batteries.

sorry i'm firmly stuck with getting a garmin edge touring and didn't wan't an external; battery as that too runs out and will be using my garmin on my lejog

if i buy or make a battery holder like bellow

but fdirst figured out what combination the garmin would need to safely charge i could solder it to a garmin usb charging lead and bobs your uncle buy standard disposable batteries on the go

I have done garmin chargers off the battery for Di2 electronic shifting.
I also use a solar panel clipped to my backpack when on my MTB to charge the garmin, which has added flexibility as it can charge, lights, mobile phones and more.

so i'm crap with electronics but there is no harm in providing too many amps as the device just draws as much as it wants right?
Cheers Ed

Items that provide more amps are expensive, so the higher the amps the higher the price.
