Visited today my TREK dealer in Veldhoven The Netherlands, who is the son of Gijsbert van Herk who was in the sixties to eigthies a bikecylce innovator. Watch these photos:

I wouldn't fancy a 25% gradient on it, it would flip backwards in no time.

Ridden a few really short frames BITD. Main problem was smacking your heel on the chainstays or rear mech!

Apart from one corner of Limburg, the steepest gradients in The Netherlands are the little bridges over the canals, which is a good job with that cassette - its set up for headwind and tailwind mode!

These bikes were built at special request of the Dutch team pursuit team. This innovator also introduced the oval chainring and closed wheels.

Oval chainrings go way back before my time...and I'm old lol. Are they a 40's-50's thing.
