My last mobile I had for about 7 years. Earlier in the year I thought I'd buy a new one as soon the old one would die. Wrong, despite being dropped many times the old one lives, the new one having been dropped once - today, has died.

My question is this, I use pay as u go but if I have a contract and I break the phone do I get a new one or do I have to pay for it? Might make a difference on which way to go.

Rule of thumb is that you break it you pay for it (unless you have insurance) contract or not.

That said, your new phone is relatively new... is it obviously damaged on the outside? If not try a warranty replacement/repair.

The outside looks fine but the screen has gone horrible and pressing the keys does nothing all lights up nicely though!

If you have insurance on your contract phone they should replace it. They will probably send a courier to do a "drop & swap" with the old faulty handset. If it's damaged they will do the same thing but you will probably have to pay an excess fee of £30 or something.

Can't you put the sim card in the old phone if it's still working?

that's exactly what I'm going to do as a temporary measure though will need another one as I like to give the old one to DS2 in case he comes off bike on way to school and needs to get hold of me - he doesn't get his own until Senior School.

Has the sim card been jolted out of place?

nope actually in fiddling with the sim card and battery again, screen seems to have died totally (not that it was any help anyway), have it plugged in to see whether a charge will help but I think it's RIP little phone.

I am hard on phones. I am onto my fourth this year. The last one I had for a day before I lost it on a mountain

Strip it. Might be a connection of something. I immersed my last phone in water, twice, once for ten minutes (don't ask) and I got it working again on both occasions. Nokia, they're pretty tough.

My current phone's a Nokia too and I've dropped it onto concrete a couple of times without incident, although it did take a chunk out of the corner of it! :0(
