Hi, i currently have a mountain bike, which is perfect for me, its the right size and i am in love with it. Would i be able to put drop down bars, used on the racing bikes, on it. or should i just get a new bike? any ideas?

Why do you want them? What would you use them for?

It would be a bizarre looking bike. A cyclocross or road bike would make rather more sense if wanting speed on roads ( presumably why you want to do this)

Bar ends would give you more hand positions on a mountain bike

Looks like lots of people have done this.

Not sure why though

Those 'Midge' bars can look good as can the 'Butterfly' ones, I see quite a few on MTBs converted for touring,

I've just put a pair of them on my Raleigh resto bike

I was a tad dubious about them TBH but the 'price' meant they were a no brainer ;)

I'm actually very impressed with them, the hoods feel natural and the brakes are far easier to use from the drops than on conventional drops as you're not in as extreme a position when using them with them being so shallow.

In fact I tend to brake from the drops with them now all the time as they feel so comfortable

Re: the OP though, MTB's with drops do nothing for me personally, I think they're fugly in the extreme, but hey, if it works for you and makes you happy then fill your boots.

Me? I'd get another bike if funds allow it

A lot of fellows here in the States use old rigid frame mountain bikes for this, giving these old bicycles a new lease on life, Sort of like a Thorn Sherpa 26" Tourer. I'm working on refitting an old Trek 800 in this fashion, just to have the tire choice and ruggedness. Mostly for fire trails in the pine forests and unimproved roads in the countryside, I'll post when I get this little project completed, but I've seen the Trek 800 series converted before, and they look pretty reasonable.

Is there not an issue with the front mech on MTB having a different pull to road bikes so you would have to replace the front mech as well to get it to work with STI shifters?.
I would like to do this mod to my subway if i had the time and cash .
