because of a neck problem I have to change from dropped to flat bars...my current chainset is a 9 speed Shimano 105 triple and I have been told that this is not compatible with MTB type shifters/brake levers....has anyone any suggestions on a workaround ?...,,

I often think it would be better to swap the whole bike for another one, there is often more to think about than just the gears.

Are you sure you have the current setup correct.

Just put a shorter, riser stem on and keep the drops. You don't have to ride I the drops, the hoods provide excellent positioning. You can also ride on the straights, even fit auxiliary brake levers there.

9-Speed Shimano btw, is compatible with MTB shifters. It is 10-Speed Dynasys that's not compatible. You also get special 105 flat-bar shifters.

Again I would keep the drops. Use a steerer tube extender which will raise your bars right up and then use a shorter stem, maybe 60mm which will lessen your reach. Try this onehttp://www.wiggle.co.uk/bbb-bhp-22-...ww.cyclechat.net&utm_term=78888&utm_content=0

You could try something that riders used to do when low pro bars first came out.

Take your existing drop bars or an old pair.
Remove levers etc.
Turn bars upside down, so that the dropped section is now above the flat section and pointing to the rear.
Refit the levers on the curve section of the bars.
Then hacksaw the bars just above the levers - about 8 to 10 inches from the end.

This will allow the existing levers to work in the curved section of the bars and will be more akin to riding on flats.

Not tried it myself, but have seen it done and will be less messy than changing levers and cables.

Good luck

You can get roadbike flatbar controls from Shimano.
Be aware that there are flat bars and flat bars. I switched from MTB flats to On-One Mary for a more neutral wrist angle.
Tourists, esp older ones, often use drops in a higher and closer position.

Swap to 'Bullhorn' handlebars like these.

If you're keeping the roadie brakes, you'll need brake levers with the right pull - not MTB/v-brake, but any 9x3sp shimano shifters will work.
