I'm also terrible for this at this time of year. I try to have a sip every 10 mins or so, as well as after every hill, whether I think I'm thirsty or not.

I seriously don't drink enough particularly when group riding at this time of the year :shy: . For example on yesterday's 60miler I drank about 3/4 of a 750ml bottle and on today's 80miler even less just over half. Has anybody any tips for forcing my self to drink more.

If you are getting round those routes on your current intake, then the evidence suggests that you don't need to drink more. I took a 750ml bottle on a 4-hour ride this morning - it was still about 80% full at the end of the ride. I usually drink more than that, and the temp was only around +2deg at best, but it doesn't alter the fact that I got round perfectly ok with no ill effects.

Drink when you feel like it. I took 2x 700ml bottles on yesterdays ride, I used about half of 1 of them, brought the rest home. Often times, I end up back in the car park at the end of a 40 miler before I even crack a bottle open.

I try to remember to take a sip every 10-15 minutes because I know I'm very good at just ignoring thirst I am until I start to feel the effects of dehydration. In summer, I always make sure I drink 500ml an hour, but I don't worry if it drops back to half that in winter.

I remember really not wanting to drink on early winter commutes in the UK because I was already cold without adding even colder liquid to my body, so I waited until I got to work, and then had a cup of tea/coffee to rehydrate and warm me. If I was cycling in cold conditions now, I think I'd get an insulated bottle and take a hot drink with me. The added warming effect would give me extra incentive to drink frequently.

Stop at a pub?

Good call - mine's a Guinness

If it aint broke dont kick it. No need to alter your technique if your not getting any negative side effects. I always drink when I start to feel thirsty which works for me.

are you dehydrated at the end? as other have said you may not need to drink that much and a lot will depend on what you drank beforehand.
Also the fitter you are, the less you need to drink so I understand. but for me, I need plenty because of my asthma. trying to breath over a dry throat and exercise in the cold at the same time is not possible for me. For me yesterday on a 45 mile ride (lunch at home so was able to refill) I drank 2* 680ml in the morning and 1*680ml in the afternoon with 2 cups of tea at home in the middle of the ride. My OH typically drinks less than half what I do, but I have always had a high water intake.

Pre plan the drink points before you leave. More often than not you will remember.
I tend to look at my speed and distance regularly, and take a sip every 5 miles, even if i am not thirsty
