This is a coast to coast route that I have knocked up from my home town of Fleetwood, Lancashire to Tynemouth, near Newcastle. I have done the official C2C twice from Whitehaven to Tynemouth and believe this route to be an attractive alternative.

The route is mostly on quiet roads with very few busy sections encountered until reaching the Tyne.

The journey begins in Fleetwood and the first goal is getting over the Trough of Bowland. The route after the Trough heads over Tosside to Settle and then up Ribblesdale into the three peaks territory passing Pen-Y-Ghent on the right, Ingleborough on the left and arriving at Ribblehead Viaduct which sits beneath Whernside. You might be lucky here and catch the "oggy wagon" open for a brew.

Turning right at Ribblehead, the road climbs up and over to Hawes and then a grind over Buttertubs Pass. After flying down from the top of the pass it is up hill and down dale as you make your way through Thwaite and Keld. Afterwards, there an uphill slog to the mecca of English drinking establishments....The Tan Hill Inn. If attempting the route in 2 days the Tan Hill Inn makes for the perfect overnight stop. Campers are also provided for in a small area to the rear of the Inn.

The route continues along the moor top before taking the bridleway to the left that runs alongside the Pennine Way to Bowes, over the hills to Teesdale and then a big climb over the moors to Stanhope where the route joins the official C2C route to Tynemouth.

Details Stanhope to Tynemouth section can be found here... The c2c guide
