Down shifting

This question has probably been asked a thousand times before but I can't get anything useful from the search, perhaps I'm using the wrong search terms.

Anyway, having just changed my cassette and chain I'm having trouble adjusting the deraillier (which I have almost certainly spelt wrong.) When I shift down to a larger sprocket, moving the chain close to the bike, the chain doesn't seem to move across quite far enough and rattles. This can be immediately remedied by moving to a smaller sprocket. I've checked the alignment, which seems fine to my uneducated eye and loosened the high limit screw which didn't seem to do much. Although I hesitant to loosen it too much for fear of loosing my chain into my spokes.

It's annoying me that I can't work out how to fix this so any input would be greatly appreciated.
 
The indexing needs adjusting. Don't touch the limit screws as they stop the chain from overshooting the end sprockets, but turn the barrel adjuster on the mech anti-clockwise by half a turn to take up the slack on the cable. If that doesn't quite do it try another half turn.

When you get the chain on the largest sprocket check that the limit screw is butting against the stop seeing as you have adjusted it already.

The limit screws just stop it going to far over , it does not affect the shifting you need to turn the jockey wheel wheer the cable goes into the rear mech.

Generally if you stand behind the bike and want the gear to go towards the wheel easier then turn it towards the wheel 1/2 turn and test until it shifts nicely i think.

Ta all, I was thinking the limit screw dictated how far over it shifted as well as where it stopped. Luckily when I realised it wasn't doing what I wanted I put it back where it was when I started. I shall have turn of the cable tension when I get in from this evening.
