while idly musing on the helmet debate it occurred to me that some light mounts and camera mounts could compromise the integrity of a helmet in the event of a fall or is that just b*******

Nope it's not b*******.
The mounts could quite easy snag and may cause rotational injury.

It could, and if you 'tw@t' the helmet light on a low branch, it could be rotated through a vent and give you a bump on your head, or a twisted neck ! Then again, you could fall off your bike !

It's really not worth worrying about !

I don't wear a helmet myself, but I agree, using a helmet mounted anything can compromise the amount of protection you get in case of a collision. CycleGaz swears by the Countour HD, as it detaches itself in the event of an accident, but I haven't any personal experience of this.

I don't think it's worth worrying about in the long run.

I make sure I buy good quality products which use decent mounts, zip tieing something to your helmet is probably going to result in it staying there in a crash.

Both my ContourROAM and Exposure Joystick will break free from the helmet in the result of a collision with something like the ground.

I've written many times of the dangers of strapping anything to a helmet.

Either from rotational injuries or from damage caused to the integrity of the structure by crushing it with clamps and mounts, or from adding a route for force to pass straight through the helmet without the "protection" that the shell and expanded polystyrene may offer.

Any perceived or real benefit which may derive from wearing a helmet may be negated by strapping things to it.

At the end of the day, yeah there may be a larger risk from having things strapped to your helmet *if* you ever fall.

Obviously the reduced risk from having a helmet light, would far out way that. And I'd know I'd rather have a camera in the case of a hit and run, or other major crash.

All in all, safer with stuff attached to helmet. Lights are obvious, I'd like to say having a camera on my head has made me a safer cyclist.

It still makes a shaped impactor into the polystyrene if it hits on the camera.

or you could look at the impalement issues of something strapped to your bars . a decent properly designed mount will shear off under impact and not be an issue.

if you want to wear a helmet fine do so . if you don't fine do so. I wonder how much server space worldwide is holding helmet debate threads

Would it be churlish to point out that helmets are unequivocally proven t work as a platform for helmets and cameras..... and given the level of protection offered by an EN1078 helmet - is there actually any real relevance?

The OP has made an assumption as to why helmets are being worn, how do they know they are being worn for protection and not just as a mounting platform????
