Took my bike to the lbs today for them to change the cassette and chain which I supplied. They indexed the gears but they haven't done a very good job, they claim that's the best they could do, due to the rear mech being worn and having a lot of play. There is play in the rear mech but I'm not convinced that you couldn't get the gears to change better than they are even with that. The main issue at the moment is that when in the 3 smallest gears in the big ring, the chain rubs against the front mech. I'm surprised if the bike shop couldn't rectify that when indexing. Gonna take it to a friend tomorrow, hopefully he can do a better job. I have an 100 mile sportive on Saturday, and I wouldn't fancy doing it with the gears being the way they are at the moment. If the problems persist after my friend has a go, I shall have to try and get a new rear mech fitted before Saturday. No pressure then.

Can you not just trim the front mech?

If its rubbing on the front mech,It shouldnt be the rear mech thats causing the proplem?..
There should be a barrell adjustment for the front mech, give this a quarter turn to see if it cures your problem, also you may have to check your limit screw on the front derailleur to make sure that it can move to where you need it to be...I dont see why they would of had to do anything with the front mech if everything was fine beforehand unless it got knocked or something while they were fitting the chain

That's what I'm thinking, the bloke did seem rushed off his feet so maybe he rushed the job a bit. Tried the barrell adjuster earlier....won't budge, so will see if my friend can help.

I was mildly surprised that the OP found a shop willing to fit a cassette and chain supplied by the OP not by the shop. I'm not sure every shop would be willing to do that?
They all do in my experience? My LBS just charges an extra bolt on fee (fiver I think) in addition to the usual fitting fee. A reasonable amount more in addition to the labour charge if you want a whole bike built. Fair enough imo

Don't know about cassette and chain, but my LBS was happy enough to fit a headset for me that I supplied myself.

OK - something learned - my expectations of what it is reasonable to ask a shop to do was wrong. Thanks.

I presume the extra that they charge is an approximation to the profit margin they would have made on the component.....

No idea. They’re upfront about it though.

For your issue, the barrel adjuster will work when the front mech is in the intermediate setting. The adjustment will drop the mech such that the inner plate misses the chain on the larger cogs of the rear cassette.
This intermediate trimming/adjustment has no affect on the position of the front mech when pushed to its outer limiting screw to cater for gears lower down the cassette. Adjusting the limit screw is the wrong approach.
Any reasonable bike mechanic should be able to adjust this for you.
