I've seen a few locked up like that, not many though..
I'll probably use 2, mini D-lock for the frame and a rubbish chain for the front wheel. But I'm paranoid and a lot of bikes around here get nicked.
Most I see just use 1 lock.

Yep - especially in Portsmouth...

1. Abus Granit xplus 54 through rear triangle and wheel to fixed object.
2. Masterlock StreetCuff to lock rear wheel through frame to fixed object
3. OnGuard Bulldog bike locks fron wheel to frame with Kryptoflex cable lock looping around the frame and a separate fixed object where possible.

On the recumbents there is a different routine, but the same locks.

Yeah, three normally - combo of 1 or 2 d-locks with 1 or 2 big heavy chains, depending on what I pick up in the morning and where I am going. But I just try not to leave my bike anywhere these days - take the foldie instead and carry it with me if necessary.

How long does it take you too put on all three locks, are your bikes fairly expensive. They say you should spend 20% of the value of your bike on the lock. whats your thoughts

Yeah, locks prob cost about 20% of value of each bike. Doesn't take too long to put them on, you get used to it. More the hassle of carrying them. Reckon couple of locks weigh as much as my road bike... hence trying not to have to lock it.

Of the bikes I use most are in the £600 - £1000 plus group, three in the £1000 plus and two in the £2,000 plus group when you look at additions.

Time is a well spent illusion. Be seen to take time locking up your bike with a quality set of locks and the average thief on the lookout for a target will be deterred.

leave unlocked

would you ever jump into the shop for 30seconds and leave your bike outside unlocked. i have seen quite a few people doing this.

Never....... As a minimum I would use the Abus Granit!

I wouldn't leave my bike anywhere that needed three locks

Always somewhere fairly secure and one big heavy chain and padlock

That would cause you problems here.......... My main place of work is next to Paulsgrove

Violence against the person 32.6 (16.7)
Robbery offences 1.4 (1.2)
Theft of a motor vehicle offences 4.5 (2.9)
Sexual offences 2.5 0.9
Burglary dwelling offences 5.7 (4.3)
Theft from a vehicle offences 14.1 (7.6)

These are figures per 1000 of the population and the brackets figure is the national average.

I want to commute, shop and leisure cycle and unfortunately the figures would preclude taking my bike to work or almost anywhere inthe city!

I lock mine with one good quality D lock. I remove the front wheel and lock the frame and both wheels to railings etc. That's good enough for Manchester so it'll be good enough for most places. The best defence against theft apart from a lock is to ride an unfashionable, scruffy tourer with drop handlebars. It's worth more than 90% of bikes on the road but thieves don't seem aware of this.

depends on the value and nickability of the bike, sure

but I've always managed to lock up indoors or at least under cctv and security guards

I wouldn't use it for shops and stuff for the reasons you give unless I could bring it indoors

these days it's quite valuale and very nickable, and cleats don;t really make for good shopping
