...feel like turning back in the first few miles, but after say 4-5miles the whole feeling just changes?

I feel like this the few times I've been out on longer rides. Is it just a case of my un-fit body lol.

On a long ride the first few miles is jut your warm-up as your body starts to adjust its output to what you are asking t to do.

Earlier this year I went on the Virgin Money Cyclone 33 on my heavy hybrid And my 7yr old daughter attached to the back on a trial-a-bike. Within a quarter mile fighting against the wind at abt 11mph I wanted to stop there n then as it was a further 2 miles to the start so another 37 to do!
I kept going and after abt another 4 miles I was fine.

Yuuuup, happens to me all the time, same thing happens when I'm running too.

I need to ride into a ride if that makes sense, and when running I hate the first mile or so, then I hit a rhythm and it never feels as bad then.

Some say I set off too quick as well so this probably doesn't help matters

Totally agree. First 5 mile I want to turn back and give up, after I get warm I can keep going up to 35 mile or so. I have to admit I give in even before I start, just thinking about first 5 mile is enough somedays.

Yup totally agree, almost everytime i go out everything in my body tells me to stop turn around go home & get my feet up, this is normally between about miles 2-5 but once i'm through that barrier i feel alot stronger & regularly go on & do 35miles or so....so yeah, its not just you !

Yes all the time...takes a few miles to get the mucscles warmed up and the fitter you get the longer it seems to take to warm up. I too seem to start off too strong and suffer a little so now i consciously try and temper my start off speed to allow the warm up first.....its not easy though:rolleyes:

All the time here too. The first mile or three are always hard work. Its really windy today and hubby is making excuses already. We haven't even got changed yet.
Once I am warmed up, I am happy to ride for however long our route is, I enjoy it too, but that first 10 minutes or so are hard work.

As others have posted above - you are just warming up. I get it all the time.

I haven't been 'proper' fit for quite a while, but when I last was, I found that I could ride 70 or 80 miles feeling just okay on my bike but then I'd suddenly realise that I was starting to feel really good! It was as though the first 3/4 of a century ride were just a warm-up to get me ready to enjoy the last 25 miles.

Glad it's not just me.

I always get the opposite effect when home too. I wished I'd stayed out longer to do more miles lol.

I live on a hill between two larger hills, there is no easy way out of my neighborhood, first half mile is always rough and i feel like I want to not ride. By the end of the first mile after things have leveled out I am usually good to go.
