dodgy left foot????

ive recently taken up cycling and am really enjoying this. i normally do around 27 miles twice a week and a bit longer on a Saturday ride (40/55miles), recently ive started to get like pins and needles in the front of my left foot, this tends to be in the front third of my foot. its worst around my big toe and radiatres down, its bearable when cycling, but when i get off the bike after my ride i can hardly apply any pressure or weight to the front of my foot, i do quite a bit of walking too and its starting to impact on that after a few miles and im walking with a bit of a limp, im booked into my quacks to investigate but enquiring if anyone else had this and if so what is it??. i did recently do a 85 miler and it was really bad after that to such an extent i laid off the bike for a week to rest it, got back on it yesterday 26 miles and it started again, any help greatly appreciated, i hope i dont have to jack cycling in as its changed my life for the better, many thanks, mike

Are your shoes a good fit or a little tight? It could be something to do with either your shoe fit or the position of your foot on the pedals. Do you use clipless?

Hi Sam,
Appologies for late repply been on holiday, i do use clipless pedals and your right about the shoe, i did buy some cheepos from Aldi and i recently went in an ordinary pair of trainers and the pain was not as bad. however was still there, seen GP who has taken x ray awaiting results. do you think i would be better off with clip ins, cheers, mike

It may or may not be relevant, but I suffer in the same way if my shoes are done up too tight. Bear in mind that pins & needles is typically down to a reduction in blood supply to the affected area, so make sure shoes/socks, etc are not too constricting.

I get numbness in my left foot, because that foot naturally wants to be at an angle, with the toes pointing outwards. This can be accommodated to an extent by adjusting the cleats to allow my foot to be at it's natural angle, but not completely, so I move my foot if I feel numbness occasionally. I also leave the front strap on my shoes loose to minimise pressure.

I get numbness in the same part of my left foot if I've done my shoes up too tight. If I can't be bothered to stop and loosen my shoe, I find taking my foot off the pedal and wiggling it around as soon as the numbness starts generally keeps it under control.
