Do I need a Specific Canti Brake Straddle Cable?

On my canti's (conventional yoke type), the straddle cable has a small 'lug' welded about 4-5cm before the end.

What does this do? And, as the wire needs replacing, can I use a normal V-brake type cable instead - as I have lots of these.

Thanks.

The lug is there for grip when you want to pop the straddle cable out.
If you're happy that you can still grip the cable then there's nothing to stop you using a cut-down conventional brake inner cable in place of the straddle wire.
