Hi, been riding a Shizuoka Hoy 001 for a few months now. It has quick release for for changing tyres so no nuts as such. Therefore I gathered I don't need a spanner. However, on the other side of the quick release to the forks there is a plastic sort of nut which I have always been able to unscrew with my fingers.....only now its a bit loose and I tightened it by hand again tonight but it keeps working itself loose. Should I be tightening with a spanner and carrying one with me all the time in case of puncture?

Pictures? I don't think I've seen one like that. QRs I've seen have what looks like half a spokey dokey on the other end or a knurled ring nut.

Is the saddle all Allen heads? If so, I doubt the spanner's vital unless you want to help others.

undo the quick release lever, turn the plastic knob a little to tighten with fingers (it wont feel tight until you close the QR lever), press and close the quick release (QR). Never open using the nut, always the QR lever.

so the nut adjusts how tight things will be once the QR lever is closed.

the QR lever should be hard to close, not impossible but hard enough to have to put a small impression on your hand (as someone else mentioned on here a while back).

also I recommend not lining the QR lever up with the fork or rear stay. its hard to get your fingers under a closed QR against a fork especially in the wet/cold lever so I leave mine parallel to the ground...like streamers blowing in the wind

Great advice as usual on here. Ok tomorrow I shall pull the QR, tighten the plastic knob and then close the QR. Glad I checked, the wheel falling off mid tide could be nasty. Thanks again
