Hi CycleChat!

I've been commuting on a second hand raleigh for a few months now, and have recently taken it to pieces to clean everything up and get it rolling a bit smoother.

Having done so, I replaced the chain and rear derailleur as they were rusty and now have a problem with my gears slipping when I pedal hard on the smaller sprockets of the cassette...

I have taken a few snaps of it and wanted to know if I should consider replacing? I've spent a while adjusting my old and new rear derailleur to get the slipping to stop to see if it was the fact that i changed the derailleur, and no matter the tension of the cable, or old/new derailleur, the problem does not go away.

I've done some digging on the net and found that its generally good practice to replace a cassette that has had a worn chain on it for quite some time (which I have used every weekday for the past 6-7months of ~4miles per day)

Thanks,

Replace cassette and buy a new chain again. So say maybe 6 months later replace chain. You'll get longer life out of cassette and chain drive.

If your chain is new (that's the impression I get from your post) then maybe just try a new cassette. The teeth on sprockets 4 & 5 do look quite 'stubby' compared to the others. Is it jumping in those gears?

Hi all,

Thanks, i purchased a HG41 cassette, and HG40 chain. I get skipping in all gears except the 24T sprocket. It gets worse the closer i get to the 12T sprocket though.

I'll update if it fixes my problem when i get the delivery (hopfully tomorrow)

Hi All,

I had delivery this morning and fitted everything a few hours ago.
After a quick re-adjustment of the rear derailleur, everything is working fine.

Here's some pictures for comparison with my older cassette with the new shimano HG chain.

Thanks for all your recommendations.

The chain is lubed... I didn't think the sprockets had to be?
