I'm in training for my first Sportive (the Suffolk Sunrise 100) and all's well so far.

However, as the length of my training routes increase I'll need to be eating & drinking on the go.

Being out of work, I can't afford to buy the "proper" stuff, so I'd be grateful for your advice on homemade fuel to take with me.

I see in another post that Ravenbait suggests 50:50 orange juice/water with a pinch of salt; and bananas are an obvious foodstuff.

As most of the bars seems to cereal based, what about flapjack made with oats, honey, raisins and chocolate?

I've read "one bottle & one bar an hour": does this seem about right? What does a bottle hold, 1 litre?

Thanks in advance of your time and trouble.

Try a Morrisons Dundee cake absolutely packed with fruit and almonds £1.60 dont go for the cheeper ones. Cut into slices and cling film as good as any energy bar and should keep yo going for 100 miles.

As for fluid as ive said before but dont mind repeating. Weigh your self before you ride then again after the difference is the ammount of liquid you should consume on the ride. e.g 1 kilo= 1 litre bottles are normally 500 or 750 ml.

Thanks (I do search before I post, honest).

Are you saying that literally one cake will sustain me for 100 miles, or just that it's the sort of food I should be chomping?

Those flapjacks sound fine to me, they certainly have the right ingredients for keeping you going. Banana and OJ/water + salt are also good. Something like wine gums/ jelly babies towards the end are also a good way of getting sugar in quickly if you need to. Also, a packet of nuts can get salt in quickly if you are feeling crampy.

All above suggestions are pretty much spot on for alternatives to the brand name 'proper stuff'.

If in any doubt, just read the back of drink bottles or energy bars and google the ingredients to see what else uses those products.

If you're doing a long distance / race then being hydrated is a priority and a good formula to ensure good hydration is within the 24 hours before make sure you consume 40ml of water per kg of body weight. Just a little tip that personally I think everyone should know but few do

Do you mean that should be drunk steadily over the course of the preceding 24 hours, or just chug the whole lot down at some point?

Thanks for all your advice: Malt loaf, bananas and squash/water/salt have fuelled me on the Suffolk Sunrise and the Dunwich Dynamo with great success!

Thaks again!
