I took my bike to my lbs as I couldn't face a day of swearing at it. I needed my gears adjusting and as I wheeled it in I noticed the front pads were rubbing the disc that the wheel didn't spin very freely at all.
When i picked the bike up the guy span the wheel and it went for ages with no sign of touching. To transport the bike I had to take the front wheel off and when I put it back on at home it's rubbing again. I've checked that the axle is in straight, in fact if I misalign the axle slightly the wheel WILL spin perfectly. I'm trying to work out what's happened:
1, I've knocked it in the car. I'm not sure what I could have knocked though.
2, The wheel was of centre in the shop - i think this is unlikely as the guy is really good.
3, i imagined how long the wheel seemed to spin for in the shop - is it normal for pads to catch the disk slightly?

I've had zero experience with pads and disks - is it worth me trying to have a fiddle with it tomorrow?

Undo the skewer if quick release and do it up with slightly less tension this cured my similar issue last week

I never had a binding issue with the Shimano calipers on the Carrera, even after 3 years of daily commuting through summer and winter with little cleaning..

There's a "spring" that pushes the pads back, is that in good order?. Does the caliper look centred to the disk?.

There is no spring that pushes the pads back.

It's the part in the middle of this picture, and I base this on three years of watching my front wheel spin pushing it on the back wheel from the store room to the front doors at work.

I can post a video of it tomorrow if its helpful ;-)?

I really need to get my eyes checked, as I read the thread title as something much more different and was about to suggest it got moved to the "Health Issues" area...my bad...

I thought a spring was a device for storing energy....and I'm sure that piece of bent metal does that despite Hooke's Law

"an elastic device, typically a helical metal coil, that can be pressed or pulled but returns to its former shape when released, used chiefly to exert constant tension or absorb movement."

notice the use of the word "typically", but not "exclusively". You'll find that this is not a helical spring, but in fact a flat spring.
