disk or normal breaks?

I'm sure this is a rather basic question, but I'm looking at 2 bikes, love both of them one has disk breaks on both wheels other has the usual brake block type, which should I go for as I never had disk's before? Cheers intended use will be trail, track and woodland..

I always prefer rim brakes but it depends on the intended use really.

What are you using the bike for. Ive only ever had vees/ cantis/ and side pulls and probably ignorance on my part I would go for this type again as I like the ease of maintenance. There used to be a significant weight and cost difference between them and disks too. However if I was looking at a bike for commuting I'd seriously consider disks due to their improved breaking performance and I don't think weight is an issue now. The only concern I would have would be maintenance but this might not be an issue either an owner of disk brakes would be better placed to advise.

What are the other differences between the two bikes? Can you give us a link online to where they are for sale?

Also, I assume that you mean mechanical disc brakes, and that the rim brakes are V brakes.

The advantages of disk brakes is that they are supposed to work better in the wet, and that if your rim isn't 100% true they will still work fine.

The bikes are Claude butler both virtually the same spec, so I'll be having one of them its just one is full disk and The other is "v" type I'd have hot one of them today but warns sure of , if any advantages of using either?

I moved from rims to discs and would never look back.

Maintenance is not an issue, in fact it's better than rim brakes as I was constantly adjusting my v brakes.

If you're only riding in fair weather then rim brakes should be enough, but if you ride all year round and in heavy traffic, discs are the way to go.

i've recently got a disk brake bike and would never buy another bike that didn't have them. i've found them far better than the v's and the dual pivots on my other bikes.No more worn out rims!

Disc brakes tend to cost more, so if they're the same price and same make of bike then there will be other things on the disk bike that will be cheaper. Which models are they? Are they hydraulic or mechanical disks?

As for the differences, as I said before, disks are supposed to be better in all conditions. Some people prefer rim brakes for ease of maintenance (this is more true for hydraulic disks).

I've got hydraulics on the mtb and dual pivots rim brakes on the road bike. My last hybrid had cable disk brakes too.

Disks are without doubt superior, especially in the wet, but they are heavier and hydraulic disk brakes can't (yet) be fitted to drop bar brake levers, so that limits your choices somewhat.

Despite what people think, disk brakes are very very easy to maintain (hydraulics especially so) and rarely need any adjustment. If they do, then a couple of minutes is all that is needed normally.

They all stop your bike quickly when adjusted properly though

highest price i can poss go is 300 but really wanted to get some extras with the left-over cash

Ditch the suspension and IMO you'll get a better bike for your budget and you're more likely to have left over cash Discs at that price I don't think will be an better than V brakes and will weigh a lot more

Mark .. look at buying secondhand there are some good bargains to be had if you know what your looking at, have a look in the Bikeradar for sales section

I recently bought an absolute mint 2007 Cannondale F5 from there, the bike originally cost £749.00 it has a £200.00 upgrade on the hydraulic disc brakes to Hope Mini's so it was £949.00 and i only paid £350.00 for it ... its done less than 50 miles on the road !
