No you don't need travel agents.

Has anyone tried this combination? Do you need travel agents or similar to make it work?

I want to try it on a Kona MTB with Hayes MX2 cable discs.

No, the MX2 has the wrong (i.e. mtb, linear pull, V-brake levers) cable pull. It is not suitable for drop bars.

Some mechanical ones, such as Avid BB7 and BB5 offer road as well as mtb versions. Ian has the BB7 road model on his bike.

Like Ian, my commuter (Trek Portland) is drops with discs- in my case, Shimano BR-R505s. As RAFN has noted, you'd need new brakes as well as shifters. Shimano's tech document for my brakes states:
"Use 2.5 finger levers for canti brakes such as the BL-R770 or STI levers such as the ST-6600 for road bikes as the brake levers. Do not use in combination with V-BRAKE brake levers. If used in combination with V-BRAKE brake levers, it will not be possible to obtain sufficient braking force. If using in combination with 4-finger levers such as the BL-T400/ST-T400, the braking force will be higher. Accordingly, under some conditions such as certain riding positions or overall weight, the bicycle may fall over and injury may result if proper care is not taken."

You can get drop bar levers that work with mechanical disc brakes designed to work with V brake levers - Dia-Compe 287V for example.
