I am choosing my second cycle to work road bike and am looking to upgrade from a Carrera Virtuoso, the scheme is with Halfords and I have up to £1000 to spend. I have narrowed it down to the Scott S30, Carrera Virago and the Mekk 1.5 Poggio but am struggling to make an outright decision - any help would be much appreciated.

From the (very little) I have learnt about road bikes lately, you have a choice there between Sora, Tiagra and 105 groupsets and the Carrera is a carbon frame.

Personally, I would go with Tiagra or 105 if they're all around the same money.

Visually they all look very smart, particularly the Mekk in Matt Grey .

I guess the only advice I (and others) can give is try them all if you can and see which one you like the best.

Personally I'd go for the Mekk. They get good reviews. I'd be reluctant to spend £1k on a Carrera for snobbery reasons and the fact that Halford's bike-building skills can be hit and miss. And I don't like the look of the Scott brand, but again that's a personal perspective.

That's 2 votes for the Mekk .

Thank you all for your replies, could I just add that the virago is now obsolete but I have located one in Aberdeen that is now winging its way down to my local Halfords in the West Midlands, the staff have said I can get £100 off as it is an ex-demo.

Any reason you want to go carbon ?
You have the boardman team carbon with tiagra /105 mix and mavic wheels or the aluminum road team with 105 bb30 and askiums.
Having ridden a boardman for a couple of years a well set up aluminum bike can have better spec than carbon at the same price point and if your fit is right then comfort is not an issue.

No reason as to going carbon, they just happened to be that, the Scott is an aluminium bike, but the real reason is that I want something a little different. A lot of the people I work with are in the scheme and all I see in the bike shed are Specialized, Boardman, Trek and Giant. I know that is because they are all good bikes, I would like to turn up on a head turner - very vain I know. I have just viewed the Virago and they have now knocked the price down to £750 due to the time I had to wait. Decisions, decisions! I do like the Mekk!!!

I don't think I'd buy a Carrera to turn heads. Doesn't it have a pretty low grade carbon frame given the price point. Cycling Active was very complimentary about the Btwin FC3 and the Merlin Malt CR, both under 1k

+1 for a Boardman, people will generally turn their heads to a Boardman with good spec. and turn away at a Carrera. IMO anyway

Get the Scott. When your colleagues ask what bike you've got it will be the only you will be able to pronounce with any degree of confidence.
